Cash vs. Card

by orieroberts, Saturday, February 10, 2018, 14:53 (15 days ago)

Hey Everyone,

I was just curious if a lot of restaurants/grocery stores accept debit/credit cards or if we should expect to be paying for most everything in cash. Thanks for any input.

Most of the bigger restaurants take cards (tips we leave as cash), Bodega and Sams Club etc (Sams charges % more to use card and they show you the difference) and the bigger stores all on cards. La Cava in ixtapa and Zihua good prices for liquor and take cards. Pharmacies not sure about cards but I would say yes. Especially the really common ones Farma Similares and Farma Pronto etc.

Smaller places likely no cards

When shopping at La Comer, I use a debit card. Everywhere else we use cash. Get the max at an ATM (but not after dark) and have a great time in Zihua.

I don't use a Debit Card for anything but ATM withdrawal. Everything else goes on the Capitol One card with $0 fraud protection, and $0 International Fees.

I totally agree. I use a bank debit card for walking around cash(not a Visa/MC debit card) and then our United Air Miles card through Chase with $0.00 international charge- my card has been hacked a couple of times in "Z" but Chase discovered the fraud and let us know. We have a MC & Visa for 1 air miles account and a Visa for another account for my wife(Chase offered us a total of 50,000 air miles by spending so much by a certain date). We like having the 2 cards on 1 account because when one has been hacked we have the 2nd waiting on the new card.

Totally agree with Frostbite, Labrat and Paulf.
Debit card only at ATM, and we rarely use the credit card -just at shops and restaurants where we spend more than we want to carry around in cash.

Remember when the American Express Checks were the thing. Hated having to go to a bank and wait in line to cash the checks to have walking around cash.

Loved the American Express cheques. We would travel to the USA and they would see American express and give us change in USD although the funds were CDN.

Way to stick it to the man. Do you have any suggestions for tricking the merchants here?
