Non stop flights from Chicago to Ixtapa are tricky to find since they come and go seemingly on a whim. So here is one operating now:

United has been flying non stop from Chicago r/t on Saturdays only for a couple of years now. We just got home from "Z" a week ago flying both ways non stop. When they first started the r/t, the Houston flight and Chicago flights arrived and departed to close together. The first year, there were 2 lines at the check in counter, 1 for Chicago which was checked in first and 2nd for Houston. It was a mad house trying to check in for the Houston flight because of the stragglers for the Chicago flight. The times for the 2 flights have been changed now. The only thing now, if you are flying through Houston to Chicago the connection is closer in Houston. We drive to Chicago to do the non-stop. The flight down had very few empty versus a lot flying back to Chicago on the 3rd of Feb( what a wonderful 4 weeks in Paradise with 1 week at Villa Mercedes(booked for 2019) and 3 weeks at the Grand being PAMPERED(booked for 3 weeks 2019). We use air miles and have to check the web site because how United plays with the number of air miles required. Most of the time can get the return for less air miles quicker- we book 1 way at a time so we can play with the best number of air miles.

Thanx to both of you for replying.

I have been going to Ixtapa for over 20 years, six times, and have had a lot of trouble finding non-stops to Ixtapa. Ten years ago they vanished except for a window from Christmas to about April. Now they seem to be returning. Apple used to fly a non-stop charter flight which was great. Apple had a rep at the Krystal who was there to welcome and even orientate passengers. That was terrific. Gone now as far as I can tell.

A little home video shot in Ixtapa.

I am curious... who was that Apple rep at the Krystal that you refer to?
What years?

Hi Terry!
That Apple rep? Her name is Sandy, and she is still around - it is ME! How nice of you to remember!
I recognized your name, and remember you as well. Your first trip down was when Frank Stallone was filming a scene for some movie in the very new marina - possibly the golf course. You brought me a copy of your article the following year.
It is so wonderful to hear that you are still coming down and enjoying Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo!!

Happy travels!!!!

Wowie !!!

Great to hear from you, Sandy...and I seem to remember an apple Mep named Megan?

Some of the best days of my life were during my ocean swims, Palace Hotel weight room workouts, Playa Palmar beach jogging and the bicycle-riding up and down the mountain that separates Ixtapa and Zihua.

Do you know of Gaston, a resident, who I think is French Canadian, a retired radiologist, older guy who is a champion bicycle racer? He lives in Ixtapa I think, always riding, and must be about 70? He is the gentleman seated after shooting pool with my pal, Greg. He was a character, so full of life, but I haven't seen him since 11 years ago which was the last time I was in Ixtapa.

Miss the Apple charters, the great Apple service and Apple reps, orientations...

Take good care.

Hope you are well.

We used Volaris after Thanksgiving and will use it again Sunday. Bit of a cattle car but I can put up with it for a non-stop flight.

We used Interjet coming back to O’Hare because we didn’t want a Sunday return. Reasonable layover in Mexico City. Great, comfortable flight.

The Round trip came in under $400. I’d be happy to see that combination continue.

Thanx for the reply, Fran,

A connecting flight in Denver or in Texas just about doubles the door to door Chicago to Ixtapa trip... from about four hours to about 7 or eight...during the times I went through both these connections.

It's not a deal-breaker for me because I love Ixtapa and the Krystal. But it is the difference between arriving at noonish and arriving at supperish.

There is one other alternative for Chicago area people, especially those on the north suburban area, Apple still runs a charter flight from Milwaukee to ZIH on Fridays roughly from the first week of January through Easter time or the end of March. Not sure when it ends this year. You need to use Apples web site or a travel agent to book it.

I wonder why Apple makes you use their app or a travel agent? I've come across this before. I've known that Chicagoans can drive to Milwaukee for non-stops, but that's just a pain in the neck.

Thanx for the Apple info... I'd given up on using them.

Just booked for March 11 -18 thru Apple out of Chicago and they use Volaris Sunday to Sunday. $549 each for Hotel Irma with breakfast +$40 for ocean view upgrade. I have seen it as low as $519. Got it last year for $539. They have also had the Kristal Hotel (EP) for the same price

I have a Trip Adviser alert for the latest fares/deals they do show how rare the nonstop flights are. Mostly nonstops end around March and begin around Christmas... only about 3 months of availability.

When I went twenty years ago there was a regular nonstop morning flight to Ixtapa leaving every Saturday... boo hoo ~~~!!!:-(

For people who book air only or don’t prefer to use Apple, you can book Volaris directly. They have a very good app. The website isn’t great but the app is clear and easy to use. It’s a bare bones carrier and there are some tricks to getting a better experience but for the cost and a direct flight, it ticks my boxes.

Very welcome addition to Chicago airline options.

Have you priced the United nonstop Saturday flight. In January we left O'Hare at 7:30 am and was touching down in "Z" at 11:30 am and was at our hotel before 12:30. The flight boards on the return around 1:10 pm. The thing is the price constantly varies from day to day. We use air miles and book 1 way and usually book the return first because of the demand going down- flight down had very few open seats and the return flight had a lot of open seats.

The last nonstop flight is in March and the price jumps to $901 !!!

But it's a nice 3 hour and 30 minute flight in the air.

Then until about next December it's back to a 1-stop flight, and additional hours hanging at Denver or Dallas sitting in the airport.

Flying United from Chicago through Houston, the flights that we flew only had 1 to 2 hours. After the drop of the direct, will the times change for the Houston to "Z". The Houston flight was changed to later because of the time between the Chicago and Houston flight leaving "Z"- it was a mess before with the 2 lines and the stragglers for the Chicago flight..

FYI, It looks like Volaris / Apple flys non-stop on Sunday year round, I can get pricing thru the whole year. If you can play the game and only book about 1 to 5 weeks out you can get a good deal it seems to me. But the prices can go up. I saw the cost of our package for a week later (3-18) go from $529 to $1006 in a weeks time.

Jimontheriver,

OMG, bro... thank you for that... I went to this link and indeed it does show that the nonstop Sunday flight Chicago to Ixtapa goes for the whole year until December, 2018. I've been Googling nonstops to Ixtapa for a month and didn't see that one:

Here it is on this link about half way down the page:

dhunsber,

That was a photo of the wonderful pillars which were located on the south side of the Krystal Hotel property. It was gorgeous. They even had a Catholic mass at sunset on Saturdays. Stunning setting.

Sadly that was all knocked down and is gone now. I can't recall what was built on that site? I believe it was the new hotel whose name I've forgotten.

The photo of the pillars was taken at the South end of the Krystal Hotel property on the beach. Sadly they were removed some years ago. It was a beautiful spot, even had a quiet Saturday night Catholic mass in front of the pillars. Now it is even hard to find a picture of them.
