January trip / fishing report

"I have visited Zihuatanejo for many years usually with my wife and until her passing along with my mother. After about 20 years I'm finally going to post a trip report but rather than bore you with my day to day activities I'll give you a synopsis.
I started planning the 4th (or 5th?) annual fishing trip with Mike from SF back in September and we booked 2 rooms for 2 weeks at our usual budget beach hotel in Ixtapa. I booked a direct flight from MSP on Sun Country and Mike used his points for a 2 stop flight from California. On the days we fished it was up early, a cab to the pier from Ixtapa at 6am, maybe a sandwich & snacks from the store and out on the water by 6:30 and usually back in by 2:30pm fishing with Gitana Sport Fishing / Captain Santiago or Adan. Sometimes after fishing a stop for lunch in Z or back to the hotel for a shower & siesta or jump in the pool and a late dinner which I usually followed with some socializing and a nightcap at the hotel bar. Mike and I booked 5 trips but he was having shoulder problems and missed one day and I decided to squeeze in 2 more as I hadn't filled any billfish tags) After only a strike and no catch our 1st day we ended up catching 2 dorado, 4 sailfish (3 tagged and released & one that didn't make it) and landed 10 yellowfin tuna with one weighing between 50 & 55 kg! This was pretty good for 2 old guys on the wrong side of 60 who both had surgery scheduled for when when we returned home from Mexico, mine was on January 31st thus the delay in getting out this post.

The days we didn't fish I started with a 7am walk up the beach sometimes followed by the breakfast buffet at the hotel. Mike spent his days in the sun while I sat under a palapa reading, some days I walked into the restaurant district in Ixtapa or took the La Noria bus to Z fto shop, eat or visit with my captains when they returned from the days trip. I prefer to dine in Z but did try Casa Morelos, Sr Taco and Mentiritas. My favorites meals were at Lety's & Mariscos Chendos as we had lots of fresh fish for Lety and Olga to cook for us. We also had fresh catch lunch one afternoon courtesy of our new friends from Denmark at El Mirador. Mikes choices were Daniels, Banditos and Emilio's pizza in Ixtapa and he also went to La Perla on La Ropa while I watched the Vikings game one afternoon. Los Braseros and Tamales Any are still my go to places for a good cheap meal and of course I have to stop for a beer or 3 at Zorros. Mike arrived on 1/8 a day before me and left on 1/22 the day before my scheduled departure. However due to MSP being closed the day before my departure from a big snowstorm I was able to extend my return flight to 1/25 w/o an extra charge from theSun Country and Dahlia at the hotel was able to get me the same room and rate for the 2 extra nights. When my friend Captain Santiago heard of this his response was you can fish another day! And fish I did this time with with Tor from Norway who had been unsuccessful in landing a sailfish, dorado and tuna on a fly rig that same day with was waiting for us a the dentist office, and as turned out was looking for someone to fish with the following day. What an interesting trip for my last day, Captain Santiago using hookless teasers with dead bait to bring in the fish and then Tor casting flys at the sailfish and one marlin that came in chasing the reeled teasers but unfortunately no hookups. It was Tors idea to run hooked dead bait on an outrigger so I could get some action and I caught 2 sailfish using this method. What a great day, this was followed by the three of us having dinner at Lety's where she prepare a special combo for me of her famous coconut and chipotle cream shrimp, great friends and food, it doesn't get any better than that!

Finally I want everyone to know that at No Time did I feel unsafe during my trip to Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo and I'm already planning on returning with my wife for a 2 week stay over next christmas! Yes I know I'm preaching to the choir, the regulars who keep coming back year after year and many of whom I saw enjoying Jimmy Mamou one night at Daniels but we have to spread the word.

Wow, you had a great bite on your fishing trips this year. Lots of fun and some sore muscles reeling those beauties in, I suppose. It's nice to hear many of our fav restaurants are still reasonably priced and operating. Thanks for posting your great report!
