Upon arrival how long does it usually take to pass through Mexican customs, and is it similar to the other customs in other areas of Mexico, whereby you may get a red or green light?

Thanks

If you flew first class on a flight that arrived before any others, your bag got unloaded first and you got the green light, you'll be done in no time. One is rarely that fortunate. It's probably a good idea to go to the bathroom before landing. :stirpot:

I usually arrive along about 150-165 passengers and the longest it has taken me from the time I exit the plane to the taxis is about 30 minutes and I travel heavy with a large suitcase and 1-2 other large bags full of stuff for donations so often get checked at customs and still get through quickly. Zihua airport is fast.

The biggest factor is how many planes have just landed ahead of yours. 2 years ago our flight from Chicago was delayed about 45 minutes. When we got to immigration, the line was out the door. By the time we got to our luggage, had been pulled off the carousel the line for the Custom's line was backed up. When we got our taxi receipt, it was over a hour wait for the taxis' would take a run to town and then back. There were people that did not know the taxi procedure and was trying to jump the line without a voucher. In January we were at our hotel in an hour after landing and our luggage was one of the last off the plane and trying to fine a English Custom,s Form after picking up our luggage.

Funny thing, couple of years ago we had a 5 lt box of wine and a lot of items for the kids Pacifica supports. Well the light turned red and trying to convince Customs that all the small items were for the children- he thought we were bringing them to sell. Was surprised there was no mention of the 5 lt box of wine- this was before we started doing the A/I at Pacifica for now all the drinks are n/c.

Paul, the same happened to me last year. The light turned green and as we started to walk a guy stood in front of us and stopped us. He had the other guy tell us our luggage would be checked. We stood around for quite some time as he passed everyone else through. We had boxes of pens and eyeglasses we were bringing to Rob. Finally, after repeatedly explaining they were to be donated did the other guy let us go.
Very annoying.

I believe the red and green lights are gone throughout Mexico. At least in Mexico City they were gone and I had read that they were removing them everywhere. We did customs this year in Mexico City.

When we arrived Jan 6, we had the Red/Green light- at least we got the Green. There were a couple of tables where the luggage was being checked as we were going to put our luggage through the x ray..

Lights are still in use as of this past Saturday...But the way they use it can be almost comical. I came in very heavy and traveling alone and always wonder why they don't check me every time as I come for 2 weeks with 2-3 large bags/suitcases. But of all the times I have done this, I have only been checked last year and this year. Last year when they scanned the content upon arrival I could see the puzzled look on the person scanning as I had a large box in the middle of one of my large bags with about 75 pair of glasses. So one of his co-worker in charge asked me what this was and I told him. He asked if he could have a look and I showed him and explained I was bringing them for donations. All this took maybe 5 minutes and they never bother with the electronics and other stuff I was bringing.

This year, I showed up with one large hard sided Samsonite suitcase and 2 large hockey bags size. All by myself. Having a hard time carrying it all as this has to be the only airport in the world I have been to where there is no baggage carts before you go through customs. So I put it all through the scanner and then got asked to go to the tables to be checked. I explained that the clothes and shoes were all for donations and the suitcase was my stuff. They look a bit closer to the clothing but when I offered them to take some if they needed it they told me they could not and I was done. They had a laugh when I offered to meet them outside the airport in an half hour after I had my first beer :-) But after closing my bags they asked me to go to the green/red light and press the button. I was like...so what happens if I get red lol...But it was green and I was done..all this took about 25-30 minutes from the time exiting the plane to out the doors of airport. It took me longer in Calgary...

I get checked every time as we always take a large cooler and they need to check it for prohibited items. I am always tempted to say that I have 40 pounds of beef steaks. It would be so funny but then they might punish me for getting their hopes up. I keep all the receipts for donated items and once they see that they usually send me on my way. You just need to be a little patient and respectful, never once had any problem.

A few years I flew down solo to meet my fishing buddy. I made it out in about 15 minutes until I realized that I forgot to pick up my bags. Worst senior moment yet.
