Good -- I'm the one with the half-full glass.

The GOOD NEWS is work is scheduled to begin tomorrow to fix the broken canal wall near the museum and the Vicente Guerrero primary school. Thanks to Lupita for going to speak with our dear friend the interim mayor Homero Rodriguez, to whom our offer our sincere gratitude. Thanks to Ángel del Mar of Protección Civil for getting the ball rolling. And thanks to Pablo González for his support and assistance.

Okay, the work didn’t begin today. But there is at least a budget and a plan, and I’m confident it will get started in the coming days.

Okay, the BAD NEWS is it looks like Frostbite's 386 donated eyeglasses are lost to the bureaucratic hell of the federal government. Shame on them! Apparently no power on earth that we have access to can move those people to do the right thing.

I thought it had to be the Andy Saavedra video of his plan for the waterfront on facebook.

That plan has so many problems I have trouble taking it seriously, except for the fact that the people who can make it happen are signing off on it in spite of all its problems. I left my comments with the video on my Facebook feed as well as on Despertar de la Costa's.

Here's a link to the video.

Oh my!
That is a lot of new pavement.
One possible bright spot in the whole deal is that it looks like a floating embarcadero may be part of the new muelle.

Someone has to dream big...I was thinking wow...this looks like a huge improvement, trees with shade, seating areas along the waterfront...then we hit the Salinas Lagoon and I see the Sea urchin shaped pavilion and the floating docks for tenders and yachts and I realize this will take a miracle to happen. There is no question in my mind that the Paseo del Pescador and La Cancha are grossly inadequate spaces for the predicted increase in population, or even the existing population at times...and a new square would be amazing...but who could guarantee that funding received would ever be used...isn't that the real issue in Zihuatanejo....nothing gets done as financed or planned and the rich continue to skim off the funding that is much needed for the community to be the kind of place we want it to be. Never mind the relentless unending needs of the extreme poor whose homes are in the grey shaded areas on those digitalized hillsides. Blurring reality helps I guess.

"Trees with shade." That's what the Cancha Municipal used to have before every damn presidente municipal decided remodeling the Cancha was a great way to get a fat budget to skim from.

Each time the government paves something near a tree they leave insufficient or no area around the tree trunk for water to be absorbed into the ground and the tree dies. They also planted half a dozen or so palm trees along the street by the Cancha Municipal a couple of administrations ago and every single one of them soon died. So I have a difficult time believing any municipal administration cares about trees or greenery or the ecology. Actions speak louder than words. All the trees in the video are just graphical eye candy for the presentation, like the girl in the bikini walking along the Paseo de los Pescadores.

We drove the new road from the airport to La Ropa, yesterday. We saw 2 vehicles the whole way: 1 pickup truck and a motorcycle. While seeing a new landscape was interesting, building that road struck us as an incredible waste of money.

You see "en venta" sign, also piles of dirt, construction waste, and other products to level the lots that will be built on soon.

I posted the following on Facebook, in response to Rob's detailed critique of this ill-advised "improvement" project:

"Thanks for this detailed critique, Rob. Seems to us like you've hit the nail on the head. Our response to this proposed project is one of horror. This is an exercise in sterility - sucking every bit of character out of the entire area. Anything "wrong" with the way things currently exist could be improved for a tiny fraction of the cost of this monstrous proposal. What can/should be done now? More shade trees at La Cancha, more seating, better maintenance, and fixing the ocean walkway between La Boquita and Playa La Madera.......that's it. These proposed concrete monoliths are hideous. The ONLY thing we liked with the proposal was the walkway to El Almacen........but ditch that useless and ugly massive concrete steps/seating."

How disappointing! The good news: I only brought down 1/2 of what I received, so I'd like to bring the rest down in December. All I need is specific instructions on what paperwork I need in order to avoid a similar rip-off.
