Hola..We had made many trips to Zih but about 5 years ago decided to try another area in Mexico. Now, we have decided to return..we are looking for accommodation for January - February next year. I have a question regarding the Madera neighbourhood. When we were last there, that area was experiencing some breakins and general problems with safety. How is it now?

We stay at Villa Mercedes and have had no problems. Some friends stay in a condo around the corner for long term rental over the winter and they have never had any problems over the years.

We have been staying at a hotel in La Madera for many years. We have never had a problem other than dealing with the behavior of some of the guests in the hotel!

We thank that is one of the best areas to stay. The number of Restaurants that are on the street(can't think of the name) parallel to the canal is unbelievable. We love sitting at one by the steps across the canal for breakfast especially early morning and watch the people walk by. Can do it any time of day, but there is something about the morning with a good cup of coffee after a great breakfast and people watch. When we were there in Jan, some of the places in the evening you better have reservations or get there early because of being crowded for dinner. It was Great seeing the restaurants being busy considering the competition. Years ago, was afraid some of them would not make it.

Thanks..that's great, I appreciate the information. We have always stayed in LaRopa but spend most nights on the other side of the hill and we did have some noise issues on LaRopa on our last trip ...so this year I will look into some of the places I am seeing on this site. I would love to ask for recommendations but I guess I will forego that request so I don't get into trouble...lol !

I have been going to Zihua for many years and always stay in La Madera. I find it the best location for me as centrally located so easy to walk everywhere from there. Safety is a non issue for tourists unless you are involved in the drug trade, buying or selling...

One BIG problem with these types of publications/posts of the nota roja, is that NO MOTIVE for the incidents are given, short of cases in which it may be obvious that it was groups of delinquents going at each other. :pirate:
So that leaves one to wonder exactly why the incidents occurred.
And that unknown ingredient may result in some degree of panic:worthy:
And, more importantly, it would be reassuring to know that it did not involve any tourists or vacationers :fishing: in the area.

"Delinquent" usually refers to the young, and none of these victims are young.
Establishing motive might be a first step in solving murders, but police are more comfortable describing these atrocities as "a settling of accounts", implying there's not much point in pursuing them.
I don't often read local Zihua newspapers, but I'd venture a guess that there's a lot more ink on the sensationalism of the crimes rather than on news of any arrests, let alone subsequent convictions.
I've read that Mexican prisons are vastly over-crowded. Most inmates must be in for relatively minor property crimes, because murderers seem to pretty much have a free run.

Although they explicitly mention one of the victims is un joven de 25 años, a delincuente is a criminal. You appear to be confused by the Anglo usage of the phrase juvenile delinquent.

Not confused at all, amigo.

And a 25 year old certainly isn't a juvenile, delinquent or otherwise.

Again, amigo. You are confusing different meanings in different languages. A delincuente is a criminal regardless of his age, and I assure you a 25-year old is indeed considered a joven, whether you think he’s a young man or not.

OK, OK.
That word "joven" seems to have lots of different uses. I've heard 30 year old Mexicans call their 50 year old waiters at Paty's "joven". A tad insulting, I thought.....an English equivalent to "boy"?

Not at all. Again, you are bringing Anglo baggage into Mexican culture. I don’t know how proficient you are in Spanish, but if you were truly proficient then you’d know we joke and use such expressions like joven, viejo, gordo, flaco, negro and güero as terms of endearment. Not offensive at all.

It's hard to know what to do. Obviously wouldn't be involved with drugs but those stairs look familiar. 5 pm..walking down looking for a happy hour and witnessing that would probably send us packing and traumatize us. It's so sad for the wonderful people of Mexico that there is so much violence happening which impact their life and livelihood.

It is an area of Zihuatanejo, I think up the hill from La Noria.

Buenos Aires is one of the colonias, but I don't see any such caption. I see mention of the second murder taking place in Colonia Vicente Guerrero, at the base of the hill heading away from the waterfront from downtown. A residential and commercial area, not an area any tourists would normally be in.

I don't recall any mechanic's shop in La Madera, certainly not in the tourist zone where the hotels and rental lodgings are.

A neighbor mentioned that the shooting happened at the "Pepto Bismol Mansion", but I didn't recognize any of the background.

Walked by there twice this morning and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Maybe that's where the "mechanic" was.
