Essence of Zih

by ZihuaRob ⌂ @, Zihuatanejo, México, Thursday, April 19, 2018, 13:59 (36 days ago)

The families of our fishermen and our ejidatarios comprise what most of us consider the very essence of Zihuatanejo. Much of our culture and history is made up of the folks from these families. While outsiders often criticize both for allegedly stifling "progress" in Zihuatanejo, the fact is that if push comes to shove these will be the folks who will stand up and fight the hardest to protect our way of life, something too many folks from other places keep trying to change as they bring their cultural baggage with them. We like our lifestyle and our community, and we see no need to imitate any other place. It's one thing to learn from others' mistakes, another entirely to pretend to be something we aren't.

Our fishermen work hard every single day to bring home the sustenance for their families. Together with the ejidatarios they provide the true economic foundation for Zihuatanejo, not Ixtapa. Together their products, services, shops and businesses were the original economic detonator for Zihuatanejo. But some of the lands of the ejidatarios were expropriated and not paid for by the federal government while the folks who expropriated them made and continue making millions, pretending they will never be held accountable for their misdeeds. But local patience has run out and our ejidatarios are demanding the federal government honor its obligations. They have been marching in Ixtapa each Saturday afternoon for over a year now. Ejidatarios from other communities have been joining the marches to show their support. The Monday before last state and federal authorities met at Ixtapa's Sunscape Dorado Hotel, and our local ejidatarios were there to remind them of their outstanding debt.

Been seeing more and more dorado in the morning catches, a sure sign the rainy season is nigh. B-)

You think all that money from the Ixtapa hotels and condo sales and construction goes into local banks or gets spent here? Ixtapa stole Zihuatanejo's prosperity. Look across the street from your high-rise condo. See all those failing shops and restaurants starving for clients? Most Ixtapa workers are transplants. They come, they drink, they go. They are the clients for our noisy bars who could care less about local customs or mores, and it shows. Many of the construction workers from Ixtapa's different projects (mostly condos lately) end up being the folks invading our hillsides when their construction work ends and their employers abandon them, often owing them back wages and severance pay. It's an old story that has repeated itself over and over ever since the Aristos was built.

Zihuatanejo residents shop in Zihuatanejo stores and eat in Zihuatanejo restaurants. Ixtapa promotes Ixtapa and looks after Ixtapa. That's why my family and hundreds of others are marching in Ixtapa streets seeking payment from the federal government which administers Ixtapa. Ixtapa made a lot of outsiders rich, but locals were never more than menial labor, and even then Ixtapa businesses brought most of their labor with them. Only one hotelier tried to integrate Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa, but a ruthless cacique governor ran him out of the country a few decades ago. So go enjoy yourself in the CASINO and go SWIM WITH THE IMPRISONED DOLPHINS and walk past the burnt out ruins of the old Palapa bar and think about how much good your condo maintenance fees are doing for Zihuatanejo. ;-)

And he will enjoy a nice peaceful sleep at night while you get to deal with all the loud bars and drunks till 6:00 am. That is one reason that I no longer stay in Zihuatanejo besides the great deal the Azul Grand gives me. I will admit that I may not come to Ixtapa if it wasn't next to Zihuatanejo as Ixtapa doesn't really offer much of real Mexico from my point of view.

Without the hotels you hate so much the sky would not have more Canadian Geese than flights from Canada.

If you think I hate the hotels you really haven't been paying attention.

Essence of Zih. What?

Makes us wonder about the new Kau Kan condos. Blocks the street view. Three buildings way too tall and way too close to other buildings. Also, the newest of the three will be a total block out view of other long time businesses. Whats up with that?? :wtf: :omg:

I’m pretty sure Xihuacán is the original “inspiration” for the new condos. The old if-ya-can’t-lick’em-join’em syndrome. :-(

Still...a shame this is allowed to continue. Will be nothing but buildings too close to the water blocking the view for all (or most).

I have watched this movie so many times from the USVI to all up and down both coasts of Florida to here. It never ends well for folks who love natural beauty and a peaceful laid-back lifestyle. They pave paradise!

"Florida can never really come to grips with saving the environment because a very large percentage of the population at any given time just got there. So why should they fight to turn the clock back? It looks great to them the way it is. Two years later, as they are beginning to feel uneasy, a few thousand more people are just discovering it all for the first time and wouldn't change a thing. And meanwhile the people who knew what it was like twenty years ago are an ever-dwindling minority, a voice too faint to be heard."
John D. MacDonald, "The Empty Copper Sea" (1978)

------------------

"I get the feeling that this is the last time in history when the offbeats like me will have a chance to live free in the nooks and crannies of the huge and rigid structure of an increasingly codified society. Fifty years from now I would be hunted down in the street. They would drill little holes in my skull and make me sensible and reliable and adjusted."
Travis McGee from "The Quick Red Fox" (1964) John D. MacDonald

Jeez, man, chill already!
You seem to be especially crabby of late, what with this and your reply to the Policia Federal Ministerial post.
