I was at the Liquor Barn in Lexington, Ky and they were running a special on
Tortilla Silver- a mixture of Tequila and Liqueur. I had never heard of this brand before, read where it makes a good Margarita. Was wondering about it.

I've never tried it, but from poking around the web to find out about it, I've learned that it's a mixto, not 100% de Agave. At the price point of $9.00 for a full liter bottle, I'm pretty sure it will be substandard at best. I won't be looking to prove or disprove that assumption.

If it is not 100% agave do not even stand close to the bottle you may get a contact headache. My head is starting to hurt just thinking about $9.00 tequila. The safest low price tequila I have found is Jose Cuervo Tradicional. Before everyone goes off on Jose Cuervo this is not Cuervo Gold of Spring Break fame. The Tradicional is 100% agave reposado as opposed to Cuervo Gold which is 51% agave by law and a lot of yellow dye #2 to make it gold. Reposado gets it's color from the barrel.

Correct! If it is not 100% agave, I would not chance it regardless of how cheap it is. And nothing wrong with Cuervo, especially the higher end line up...

Actually I am a Don Julio fan but Social Security does not allow for many bottles of that so it's Tradicional most days.

I beg to differ. Real tequila is 100% agave unadulterated. The mixed tequilas have to only be 51% agave by law. The other 49% is normally distilled from sugar cane. A headache in a bottle much like cheap rum. The original post noted that it was mixed with liqueur another highly sugared spirit. There are inexpensive 100% agaves available. Many distillers have finally figured out that doing it the right way is a good thing. Here in Merida at Chedraui one can buy 100% agave tequilas for less than 150 Pesos a liter and they are quite drinkable.

If you prefer to go with the "not true tequila" I would suggest dropping a few aspirins in the first one of the evening.

Mezcal isn't a true tequila and I personally find the taste and thinking behind it more like the Scottish Single Malt industry without the price.

You sort of have it backwards. All tequila is mezcal, but not all mezcal is tequila. It's simply a matter of preference and taste. Like the Mounds and Almond Joy commercial says: "Sometimes you feel like a nut. Sometimes you don't." ;-)

I'm not sure how mescal got into the tequila conversation however I agree there are some terrific complex mescals. I don't think I compared them to tequila.

Mezcal came into the conversation because 100% agave was mentioned which it is for the most part if you don't count the worm, or the scorpion .... it is also not 100% tequila as it is often not produced with blue agave.

Around here there are some amazing "home brews" that taste like fine tequila, but because we aren't in the authorized region for calling them tequila, are correctly called Mezcal and are called that here.

The Mezcals from the Oaxaca area often have the worm, and are smoked, giving them them smokiness of scotch.

It's all in the name and the region!

We used to drink a home brew in Vallarta in the 90's called Raicilla. It was normally in an old Cuervo bottle or maybe a juice bottle. It was mildly psychedelic. After a few of those the lights would start to trail a bit if you moved your head. I understand it has become popular in Jalisco and it now distilled, bottled and sold in stores.

This link debunks my psychedelic experiences with Raicilla. Maybe it was the mushrooms.
