The killing of a bartender at Zorro's hit close to home as he served me many times on my last trip. My condolences to his family. There were also a few armed robberies of d/t bars when I was there. It won't stop me from coming back but I may stay away from certain d/t bars at night.

I haven’t heard of any shooting at Zorro’s, Wes. When was this?

Robbery where? At the bar? I was up until 2. Hard to miss gunshots and sirens and I didn’t hear any.

Yes, at the bar. Evidently by some chico malo from out of town. Zorro's has been locked up by the police.

Must’ve been right after I fell asleep.

Police closed the bar? All 3 police? Wish they’d close up all the damn bars!

Sorry to hear about this but the nighttime bar scene after midnight has been out of control for a long time, nothing but crime and death waiting to happen. Especially with no police or anyone enforcing any laws. A damn shame but the current mayor running for re-election has clearly shown he could care less. Our collective pleas by downtown residents and businesses to him regarding the downtown bar problem have gone ignored, and I was insulted recently by some of his followers to “go back to my country“ if I don’t like the way things are downtown. I wonder where folks like my wife who were born here are supposed to go? A couple of years ago when a well known and liked local woman was shot driving along La Boquita and I asked the mayor what he was doing about public safety he said it wasn’t his job. He lost my respect right there and then.

I will not jump on your bandwagon about the bars as I know the owners of at least 6 and they are quite responsible and obey all the rules about late night music. The only unruly ones I have ever seen are pretty obviously connected to the cartels. The sad lack of a local police presence is clearly a problem though.

Bars have clients who often drink to excess, and bar owners could care less what they do when they leave. It’s we residents who pay the factura and clean up the broken plates, as we say in Spanish. Urine and vandalism and loud cars and loud people. Not exactly the Zihuatanejo I fell in love with, but rather typical of every place where tourism is the economic foundation. I’ll never forget my dear mother-in-law asking me with a little glint in her eye (because she was originally a Sonoran who are typically well-educated and bilingual) what motherfugger meant, and I asked her why, and she said because two gringos were fighting drunk in the street screaming it back and forth at each other in the middle of the night. That was 20 or so years ago when there were still only a handful of bars and everything closed at midnight. Things have only deteriorated much further since then. So it’s not just “narco bars” or locals. It’s the entire alcohol culture.

I quite often drink into the late night and have not witnessed the behavior you describe. Just lucky I guess. BTW, I find a certain irony in the fact that you learned about this tragic event through your own message board. It has been posted all over facebook all day by my Zihua friends, many of whom were friends of the victim. I did not know him myself as I rarely frequent Zorro's. They do not carry Ojo de Vibora. :)

Hola. It was not a robbery. It was a bunch of extortionists, "grasshoppers" as they are locally called, trying to flex their small muscles. They demanded money for "protection". Juan, a good friend of mine, said no, so they shot him. This has happened before and will continue to happen til there is some "law" here. Remember the old days when we had some strong cartels here only concerned with drugs? There was a group of extortionists that tried to come into town. Seven of them were found headless at a bus stop in Centro. No more extortionists for a few years after that. Maybe that is what we need.

What’s going on now in downtown Zihuatanejo appears to have the blessing of the local government who has done nothing since taking office to increase public security, but rather everything contrary to doing so, same as with our tourism. If any part of town should always have a police presence, especially after hours, it is the first several blocks of downtown from the waterfront.

Another troubling note in today’s news was a Futura luxury bus found in the Lázaro-Zihuatanejo highway in Joluta in La Unión with traces of blood and some bullet holes but no passengers or driver.

As below it was posted on Facebook by a Cdn friend in Zihua. While agreeing with your sentiments I knew the fellow a bit and quite liked him as many tourists come to know their waiting staff.

For those who frequent Zorro's, the man killed was Juan, a bartender.

Very sad to hear about the communities loss. I know the US has a travel advisory which I've chosen to ignore. I'm hoping everything for my upcoming trip is safe, I'll make sure to stay in at night.

I definitely understand the hesitance to come with this type of news. Each person must decide for themselves if they feel safe or not.

For me I continue to feel safe here, what is happening is largely happening among those mixed up in the drug trade. I have lived here for the past year without once having been robbed or feeling unsafe. Quite the opposite, I am greeted and greet strangers on the street and walk about town with little concern for my safety. Obviously I exercise reasonable caution in much the same way I did when I lived in Seattle. I and my partner go out late sometimes, but we don't walk down down dark alleys alone and stick to well traveled areas. We certainly don't participate in the illicit drug trade in any way.

I have no problem inviting my family from the U.S. to come visit and know that they have every reasonable expectation of being safe here. I also don't hesitate to tell you that I think you should feel relatively safe coming as well.

Saludos!
