Internet speed in Zihua

We are anticipating a move from Merida to Zihua in the not too distant future. For our VPN and US television services to work properly we need relatively fast internet. Can anyone discuss what is available there?

We use TelMex and pay the price for 50meg. It's an honest 50, I check it regularly. We have had no issues with the internet going down. We are very satisfied.

That is great news. We have had varying experiences over our 6 years in Mexico. A solid 50 MB will fill the bill. Question: do you have a VPN? Strong VPN coupled with Sony Playstation VUE changed my life in MX. Of course it works with Netflix and all the other similar services, but VUE is live TV from the States. You receive local channels based on the address of your US credit card. It includes a DVR in the cloud - save as manny as you want. Thanks again.

We use Trust Zone for our VPN to download books.

We gave up TV in the US about 6 years ago,and haven't reacquired the habit here. We may, though eventually.

You might want to check out Texture. It's a Canadian online company that provides almost every magazine I can imagine for $9.99/month. Full color just like flipping pages in the real thing. I use a iPad mini but it can be done with a computer.

With Sony VUE I use a credit card linked to my Miami mailing service and get the local channels there. For $39.99/month I get more channels than I can watch plus all of the new and sports channels.

The speed in Zihua may not matter that much if you are using a vpn. It is the lower speed of, the vpn or your home network that determines your ability to use properly. Even if your vpn is faster than your network you can expect up to a 20% reduction in your network speed due to the software having to encrypt every packet of data.

That is exactly why I was asking about "speed". The vpn always slows down what the local provider is giving us. I pay for 30 MB and it delivers about 20 MB. The speed via the vpn is only 15-18. You can see the ping rate at 100+ ms as it bounces back from the Miami server. The IZZI ping rate is maybe 10.

If everyone is happy with the two options I'll just flip a coin. I had great speed and connection with Cablemas in Playa Del Carmen. Slow speeds and constant fluctuation with TelMex in Cancun and now have blazing speed and solid connection in Merida with IZZI.

Thanks for the help. Hopefully someone will make an offer on our house here in Merida and we can move on to what seems like paradise in Zihua.

Gotta ask, unless you are doing something like downloading torrents, why use the VPN, and not just use your fast connection? I must be missing something.

Good question. My primary source of TV is Sony Playstation VUE. I get many channels and even local channels from the city of my billing address of my credit card for $39.99/month. VUE does not allow use outside the US. If the vpn goes down the immediate message is "service is not allowed in this country."

Strong VPN offers a static vpn so that I remain with the ip I registered with. Many vpn's bounce around to mask your location. I need one static location. Also with the vpn I get US Netflix. US Netflix has more new content/movies.

I can also confirm that good internet speeds are available here. We only pay for a 15mb package and get more like 10mb. It works just fine for us for Netflix and other online video watching. I also use a VPN service.
