Is anyone in Patzcuaro for the Cantoya Fest - sky lanterns festival. The pictures I have seen online are amazing. Unfortunately today is the last day.

Right? All I can wonder is anyone considering the forest fire danger or are they simply all lost in the cultural affair and festivities? Don't they care what happens after these fire hazards drift out of sight?

Totally agree Rob. They're very pretty but does anyone ever consider the fire risks? A couple of years ago in England one landed in a used tire dump. Took months to put the fire out!

Here in Zihuatanejo they burned several homes and now they are banned.

It’s tough to enforce, but yes, it’s enforced where possible.

Few years ago, Kathie wanted to spend New Years and birthday (5th) at Pacifica and dinner at El Faro's. That was the first time we had seen them. The lanterns were lit at the end of the golf course and went up over the water there. Was surprised how far they floated- a few past the Marina. That was the first and last time she wanted to be there at that time of the year- crowded and running out of food at Pacifica.

They might be beautiful but we lost our entire condo and all contents a couple years ago. A huge loss with no accountability. Sorry, I can’t love the celebration.

If your loss wasn't enough to stop the practice it certainly should have been. The fire danger was Rob's first comment after I mentioned seeing it online.

It was because of that particular fire that responsible local residents insisted on the law. There had been previous fires, but apparently no one thought to light one under the backsides of local authorities. Too bad it took another tragic loss of property to get that done.

I was stationed with the Army in Southern Taiwan( I was in the AF). One afternoon
a few us went over to the harbor where the ships were cut up for steel.
The ships are bought up fully stocked. One of the soldiers bought some sea flares.
About 2 weeks before a shanty area burnt down. 2 of the soldiers came back drunk around 1 am and decided to go on the roof and shoot them off. The first one just missed one's face- now they know how to set them off. They thought the flares were beautiful and then they started floating down with all the wooden buildings around. The next morning the Naval Police came by about the flares. The Police had a complaint from the Chinese Military because they were training with the US Marines who were on their way to Viet Nam. It sears the Chinese were using flares for troop movements and the wrong colors were going off. The guys got extra detail for a month- the Good Old Days.
