"Agostado" en Zih

Se agota agosto. Now comes "septihambre", the so-called Mes de la Patria when Mexico celebrates its independence from Spain, but here in Zihuatanejo we know it better as the month of hunger. The tourist season is over. Many hotels restaurants and businesses lay off much of their personnel. Some businesses close altogether. And frankly it's a time of hardship for a lot of folks who have already been having a hard time.

Last night the men played their games of beach soccer on the Playa Principal, and while the garbage they left wasn't as bad as the mess we saw last Wednesday morning, they still left a considerable amount of garbage. Nothing close to the pristine beach the female players and their fans left. It's an improvement, guys, but keep working on it.

This is some of the magic that can be found at El Jumil, the lovely handmade crafts shop at Casa Marina next to the zócalo.

This pretty scene awaited early risers on the Playa Principal this morning.

And as usual, the view from the pier was exhilarating. ¡Viva Zihuatanejo!

Great to hear that people are starting to pick up after themselves down here. I noticed this trip that the bags at Mega are recyclable and they seem to be using some returned bags also. Last night at dinner at Chendo's, the straws they brought the kids were biodegradable! I also feel I have seen more garbage cans in town then usual, but maybe I am imagining that. Love that it is moving in a more eco friendly direction.

Thanks, Rob, for posting the photo of el Jumil, one of our favorite shops along the Pescador.
