Growlers in Guerrero

When I’m in Canada I enjoy taking a 2 litre growler to craft brewers or brew pubs and taking home some draft beer. My growler is a metal thermos container so I could get it to Mexico. (I have a pretty good idea how quickly I would break a glass growler, even in Canada.)

I know the beer industry is very different in Mexico with corporate domination, so I’m not likely to have a craft beer in Zihuatanejo.

I remember being in a place in Zihuatanejo that had some beers on tap. My recollection is that I had a Negra Modelo. Has anyone on this board ever used a growler to take home draft beers in Zihuatanejo? Was the effort worth the effort? Where did you have it filled? What was the product range like?

I'm in Merida and craft beers are booming here. I would guess they are available in Zihua also.

There are several places in Zihua selling good craft beers but I am not aware of anybody filling growlers. Actually can't think of a place selling draft in Zihua or Ixtapa and I always been surprised about this as you make so much profit on draft. Agustina and Loop in Zihua are the two places I have seen the best selection of craft beers...

How would you get a full growler back to Canada? Driving?

It is not as much about bringing back to Canada I would think but it is nice to have at home/hotel instead of bottles/cans, especially for craft beers...

I have never seen craft beers on tap in Zihua. There are several places (restaurants) that have imports as well as some craft Mexican beers in bottles but all I have seen on tap are the regulars such as Corona or Mordello.

You have seen draft in Zihua? Where? I know they have used to have draft at Club Med in Ixtapa many years ago but that is the only place I have ever seen it...

"Chope" is a draft ....by Modelo, I think....that is available in many parts of Mexico. Carlos and Joa, at the original "flophouse bar" in Zihua, would have had it, if not for the added expense of the equipment.

In Argentina and Brazil any draft beer is referred to as "chope" or "choppe". The system has a tall handle much like in Germany or many bars that specialize in a large selection of beers, and the motion of pulling a beer is like chopping. Although it is more like pulling a slot machine handle in LV. It appears that Modelo has appropriated the slang expression as part of their beer promotion for draft beer.

The place where I had the draft Negra Modelo was on a side street off of José Maria Morelos. It was between the Pollo Loco and the Electra. Looking at a map, I’m guessing it was Calle La Laja or Presa Falcón. It was on the west side of the street.

It seemed to be more of a local watering hole than a restaurant.

For me, “driving home” in November-December will be only as far as Troncones.
