Cheapest shipping method?

Does anyone have any wisdom to share on the cheapest shipping method to Zihuatanejo? I have a box that is about 18" square and weighs no more than 4 lbs. It's clothes for a friend's daughter. I looked quickly on FedEx last night and it gave me a quote of $130!!!!! Any other ideas please? Thanks!

The best method is to find someone coming down with a little extra space. Unpack the box and put it in with their stuff and then make arrangements here for pick up.

You may owe someone a margarita later for their assistance but certainly less than shipping and no risks with Aduana...

Another idea is to just buy the clothes from Amazon Mexico or Mercado Libre and they ship for free (Prime) or for a reasonable rate to DHL or any other address in Z.

I would sure like to know how to order from AMAZON.MX I need a way to get my donations for Casa Maria Asila delivered directly to them.

When I try to log into the "translated to English" page, and click on sign it, it freezes up.

I just looked and when I tried to change the language a message popped up saying English is not available in Mexico. Can you muddle through in Spanish or ask a bilingual friend to help?

Try downloading Google translate, it works for me on their pages. May have to highlight a selection, sometimes.

And may I suggest sweetening the pot a bit. Like paying the extra luggage charge? Some people will often have a less than suitcase full and they don't feel like paying the extra luggage charge. Sweeten the pot.

Try America Ship. I have used them to ship large items from Texas to Zihuatanejo
over the last 12 months.Their rates are very reasonable. https://www.america-ship.com/

For items as large as PA speakers and as small as a cell phone case.

Do be aware of the restrictions of shipping (if they are) used clothing. If Aduana checks the package, they will refuse their entry and send them back.

Thank you. I had no idea on the used clothing. All of this is new though.

Hola Sweet Susy

When I can't find a traveler coming down with some extras space as another person suggested, I resort to US Mail First Class International.
Recently I received one of those large floppy envelopes with 1 tee-shirt sent to me from New Jersey.
It had $12.25 postage applied to the envelope, and took 3 weeks to arrive here.

Price increases substantially if you choose International PRIORITY mail.

Also, using the US Mail avoids the 16% I.V.A. IF the shipment is UNDER a stipulated value, which although I am not sure what it is at the moment, it could be the equivalent to US$150.00
All merchandise items arriving by FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc., has the 16% tax levied, on whatever the declared value is, NO WAY to escape that.

As a side note - When using the Amazon USA platform, they have their service "Amazon Global" which is relatively swift, and their shipping charges beat other transportation methods.

My experience: Using the USpS/Mexican post service seems to work OK when you have a P.O. Box in Zih; at the present time there are no boxes available. I have, as instructed by the local post office, had mail sent to what we would know as General Delivery and then expected to receive the mail. 3 letters and six months later I am still waiting for the guy at the local P.O. to find my mail. Mail from here takes about a month to the U.S. and seems to be no problem.

It appears to me that items ordered thru any Amazon source and Mercado Libre is cleared thru customs by them. If they know it will not clear customs then they won't take your order.

Just my experience. Items shipped from U.S. and not thru Amazon or similar must have a customs tag completed at point of origin. If the customs tage says it is a prohibited non item it may or may not avoid customs depending on their option for the day. It is says it contains a prohibited item then your chances of ever getting it are near zero.

I've checked into Amazon and believe that is the way I will go. I'll keep the rest of the clothes I've purchased already and bring them down with me in November. I don't think she will outgrow them by then! Thank you all for the good words of wisdom. Okay one more thing though - do most people in Mexico not get any kind of mail? My friend had to search to find someone with a mailing address for me to ship to!

No, we/they don't, although mail delivery is available. CFE and Capaz bills are slid under front gates or doors.

I agree with TalleyHoo. Postal system here is for all practical purposes a non-issue. So are credit cards and debit cards are OK for Mexicans. Some businesses take c credit ards. Most bills are paid at OXXO stores, all others must be paid by going to the office. Mexicans often do not have access to internet and if they do they don't trust the"high tech" systems. It is truly a whole new world down here. Live and learn.

Hola G. V:

We're getting off the gist of the main thread about cheapest shipping method, but that's pretty typical here....one thing leads to another lol☺

Re: " Most bills are paid at OXXO stores".....

There is an excellent website I use to purchase "recargas" for the cell phone, which also has bill paying for other services, do it from your compu in the comfort of your home.

They also routinely have good promotions on cell phone time, as well as a "Mondero" that if you buy on the indicated days, you get a "rebate" of your purchase. It has worked out super well for me.
Right now they have a 10% back Anniversary promo.

Also, if you have a mexican bank account, many of them allow you to pay bills directly from them without any commissions. I bank with HSBC and my partner with Bancomer which both offer this service. We pay our Telmex, Telcel, and CFE bills with direct transfers from our bank account online. Capaz is unfortunately still something we do in person.

In Merida we receive our CFE & JAPAY (agua) online and pay them online with a debit card from our Mexican bank. Just like the modern world. Any other bills that need to be paid we can pay by transfer online from our Mexican bank. No fees and easer than writing a check or standing in line. Just this week I paid an electrician by transfer for 900 Pesos. Most Mexicans we know pay everything online.
