Result of plastic in the oceans

Two seasons ago we boated a struggling turtle. We pulled one of those swizzle type cocktail straws out of it's nose. One of the saddest things I have ever seen. The turtle swam away pissed but we hoped for the best.

Thanks for sharing this Jack. Humanity has to kick the habit of single use plastic for sure. It won't be simple, but it can be done. We are trying hard ourselves to do this but still have room for improvement as we still have more garbage than I would like at the end of the day. We recycle, but recycling isn't going to solve this problem either. Some of the things we are doing,

1. Take our reusable bags to the market.
2. Take our "tupperware" with us to the market so that we can put our food items in them rather than the plastic bags used by the various vendors. Our regular vendors are starting to remember us now for this habit and we don't even have to ask them to not put our purchases in plastic bags.
3. Making choices to buy drinks and food that doesn't come in plastic containers. This means buying our beer in the returnable glass bottles, our soda in aluminum cans instead of plastic bottles, buying bread from the bakery rather than the industrial breads that come in plastic. We still struggle with many food items though and end up with more plastic than I would like. Things like the dog food bags, sour cream, and peanut butter jars(sorry I like my peanut butter) are hard to source in anything other than plastic.
4. We provide reusable water bottles to our guests rather than disposable plastic water bottles.
5. We buy local shampoo, lotion and body soap in bulk and use reusable containers in the bathroom to dispense them.

Those are just some of the ways we are trying to minimize our plastic usage, I am curious what other things others are doing.

You two do a great job, chickens, recyclables, just great people.

We try. We actively decided not to compost here because of the critters that are attracted to it and our two dogs. Fortunately for us, and for you too, Jesus does the composting at Sixtinos. Not only does he sell the compost, but he picks up daily at LOOT, so we can just contribute to his finds.

Little stuff-we accidentally purchased a case of 12 600ml bottles of Coke sin azucar in glass bottles. What perfect water bottles! Yes, they are breakable, but the wonderful feel and aesthetics of glass is worth the potential breakage. When they are gone (tea, water, other liquids) we'll buy another 12 pack.

We shop the mercado and town with one of those stupid rolling carts, so easy and we don't have to drive to town and don't need bags.

Paper waste? Toilet paper rolls, boxes from things like mashed potato flakes (we love them) make perfect dog toys picked up after they are finished shredding them.

Coke products are available in recyclable bottles at the Coke plant, two streets inland from the main Corona deposito and a block past Soriana.

I'm sure there is more, but we all try and hope to have any guests do it too.

We walk Playa la Ropa every morning with the dogs and swim. We always carry a bag and pick up stuff.

We need to talk to you about gentle shampoo and soap alternatives available in bulk.

That is excellent information Tally! I am particularly interested in the information about composting as I have been trying to compost here and am not happy with the results. Partially because of the other critters we are attracting to the pile. Is Loot open to having other people leave their food waste for pickup by Jesus at Sixtino?

Thank you so much for sharing your ideas!
