My family and I will down in a couple weeks. Wanted to see what songs you request from the mariachi musicians? I personally like Cerca Del Mar, Chan Chan. What is considered appropiate propina tip per song? Also thanks Rob for your website, it has been an awesome source of info and made trip planning hella easier!

Where is La Puerta Negra, what kind of music do they play? Do they start early or late?

A reasonable person might think he'd've "gotten it" when I posted the video of the song above. :fiddle:

The only time you might tip for a song is if they are unsolicited musicians who pass the hat after playing a few songs. They tend to pass through the restaurants during peak hours for la comida and la cena.

I don't know if you've see the music videos on my Services < Musicians & DJs page. Los Romanceros del Balsas are no longer available, but Los Hermanos Morelos are. They wander mostly through the downtown waterfront restaurants during the early evening.

Another of my favorite songs is Un Candado.

And I still get misty eyed listening to this, Golondrina Presumida.

If you want them to come over to your table and play your requests, its 200 pesos for 3 songs. There is a trio we like very much. Usually see them at Manglar.

Oh yeah. I spaced out on Lola and forgot to finish the thought. Thanks.

Yes, most músicos, duos y tríos charge per song. Like Malury said, usually $200 per song. After they’ve played and you’ve paid don’t forget to ask them: “¿Y el pilón?” That’s an old colloquial Mexican reference to the equivalent of Green Stamps. You just might get an extra song for free. And you’ll certainly impress any Mexicans within earshot that you even know that old all-but-forgotten expression. B-)

You can also ask for "el pilòn" in the market, asking for, say, 30 pesos of mandarin oranges, then adding "¿y el pilòn? You will get not only a couple more oranges thrown in, but also a smile. Natch, this is most appropriate if you are a regular customer of the merchant.
