Where can I find yaka?

On my drive to Zih there were tons of fruit stands selling yaka (aka jackfruit). However, I can't seem to find any in Zih. Does anyone know where I could buy yaka?

Soriana even had it earlier this summer.

Vendors on the street behind the Mercado on the way to the Campesinos Market often have it too.

Yaka is a great meat substitute. Once seasoned and cooked (to dry it out) it takes on the consistency of pulled pork.

It's best to buy them as green as possible. As they ripen, they become too sweet and aren't the best fruit. I found them at the market Mercado de Campesinos for 55 pesos and they are massive! It is a great deal. You can freeze the fruit up to one month, but it is best enjoyed fresh. I also found some in the central market but they wanted $25 pesos/kg, which was about $200 pesos.

Here is my favorite recipe - Loaded sweet potato fries and jackfruit with slaw

Also this is a great one for jackfruit tacos https://www.lazycatkitchen.com/pulled-jackfruit-tacos/
