Mexico begins a new era today. For the first time in its history, the second most powerful person in the nation is a woman, the Secretaría de Gobernación (SEGOB) Lic. Olga Sánchez Cordero who was previously one of the Ministers of our Corte Suprema. Many of the nation's toughest duties will fall on her shoulders. She assumed power in a ceremony last night at midnight along with Ministers of Defense and of the Navy.

The new Congress that was already sworn in is also made up of about half women, another first. And of course in the area of race aka skin pigmentation, Mexico is already light years ahead of the USA with the entire spectrum of the human rainbow having held positions of power since almost 2 centuries ago and still well represented in our Congreso. Yes, almost two centuries ago Mexico had a president of African descent, Vicente Guerrero, and an indigenous man, Benito Juárez, was president over a century and a half ago.

The incoming president who assumes power today, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a former mayor of Mexico City, has proclaimed his administration to be La Cuarta Transformación de México. The previous transformations being La Independencia, La Reforma, and La Revolución. While there is of course plenty of scepticism, and the new administration faces seemingly insurmountable challenges, I believe most of the nation including opposition parties wish the new government success. Something else unprecedented in our history. Mexicans have no illusions about their politicians or what they can achieve, but the nation feels more united than it has in decades, and I am proud to be one of its citizens during this fascinating time of change.

Thanks for the interesting political info re: Mexico, present and past, Rob! Although this is my 20th season in Mexico (15th in Zihua), I realize there's so much I have to learn about my favorite country on the planet.

Interesting article in the Opinion section of the NY Times today on the various challenges facing AMLO. Author is Jorge Castañeda, prominent Mexican intellectual, político and one-time Mexican Minister of External Relations. He sees major issues looming between AMLO and you-know-who north of the border.
An aside: With the ban-on-booze in effect today, one wonders what beverages were served at the reception after the swearing-in ceremony?
