doggie downers

by Casa Juan @, Sunday, December 02, 2018, 20:17 (14 days ago)

Looking for an over the counter remedy to get my 20 month old rescue dog thru the next 30 days of pyrotechnics disruption that occurs in my neighborhood every day after noon, often until 10 pm. The dog is not too interested in tequila, and don't have the desire to bake marijuana brownies for him in this heat.

Practical solutions appreciated

Readily available at any vet supply without a vet visit. If you don't know the name of it, say so, and we'll provide that.

Just as effective, aspirin, using your pups weight works just as well.

OK---I don't know the name of the product you're speaking of. Two of my seven street/rescue "family" freak out every year. It's very sad that I can't do anything to help them thru this period. Please, do tell. . . . .

I would think that the animal's weight would be important regarding dosage. If it was me, I'd go to the vet for specific information; it can't be that expensive in Zihua.

Acepromazine

Acepromazine is the "standard" dog tranquilizer. We have had great success with it. It's available at either of the vet supply places behind Santander. You don't have to buy more than you want, and they are something like 15p each.

Acepromazine is classified as a phenothiazine neuroleptic, which means it modifies the chemicals in your pets brain to change their behavior. Its a tranquilizer that depresses the central nervous system. The mechanism of action is not exactly known, however, its thought to block receptors of dopamine in the brain, a chemical used for cell-to-cell communication.

Benedryl does work, so do aspirin in a pinch, but we like the Acepromazine better.

For future reference, check out the Thunder Shirt. One of ours is afraid of thunder, the other, fire works. Fortunately it's cooler at night, and if she starts panting and shaking during thunder, the Thunder shirt calms her right down and has yet to overheat her. The other one for fireworks? Under the bed where she'll get stuck, but sleep until morning.

My friend uses Lavender oil and a st. Johns wort capsule.

My dog swears by Rescue Remedy for Pets, you can get it on Amazon.mx, or see if someone would be willing to bring down a bottle for you.

I also know people who use Thunder Shirts, I haven't had good luck with this or CBD treats.

PLEASE DO NOT give your animal THC,
it's so bad and dangerous for them. CBD strain is fine, you can look online to see how to separate the THC out.
