Cross the bridge past the Museum and go left on Calle Adelita. This is Restaurant Row. It is surprising how many places have opened on this street. Since the street was closed for a couple of years to be redone, there are a lot of new that have opened now. In the evening a few are grilling along the street. Because of popularity of the neighborhood people will be waiting for a table in the evening- good area to people watch both morning and evening. If you keep walking and pass Hotel Villa Merecedes, the street ends at Valenta. Go left and just a short distance is La Casa Vieja. It's like a Mexican Garden. They have a great Sunday Brunch. We normally go there after Church and pig out I am afraid to say- then we only snack for our evening meal. We have been going there at least once each trip for at least 5 years when we started staying a week or more at Villa Mercedes.

Paulf is right on regarding Calle Adelita. We have dined along that street many times. Lots of the old familiars are still there and serving up wonderful meals. There are also a few new places to try. Just wander in and choose one that looks appealing to you. Then return another time and have a go at another...

When the street was closed for such along period of time, was afraid our favorite would not make it. What is amazing not only have they come back but you have more. It feels as if there is more people using all of the restaurants- old and new. Our favorite is across the street coming down from the canal bridge with his tables set up between the stairs. He went to Chef's school during the time. It is great seeing how vibrant the street is. We love having breakfast at one of the little places and people watch. Normally in the mornings, it's not as busy. What I like about the street is how friendly everyone is. What is great, you'll be having breakfast and coffee and see someone you met a couple of years ago. That is why we love staying at Villa Mercedes for we are right there.

If you are referring to the extensive roadwork done on Calle Adelita a half dozen years ago, the street never fully closed, at least not for pedestrian traffic. For example, except for perhaps a couple of days, Salvador's remained open throughout. For months we climbed over and around mounds of rock, mud and concrete.
I love the post subject: there's nothing like "authentic food". You know, as opposed to .......... One of our local ice cream manufacturers, (Breyers?) actually has printed right on their packaging: "Made with REAL ingredients".
Thank goodness.

I know of so many places but not names or addresses! Just how to walk there. Common problem I think. All Rob's suggestions are good, I especially like the ones without web sites. Walking around a few blocks off the normal tourist path and see what places are full of locals is a great indicator as well. The goat taco cart is fabulous, usually on a corner of the fruitarea street behind main market, prepare to stand in line and wait. Like #8 in the Mercado Solidaridad (sp?)for lunch specials, Auri for light and late supper (beside Hotel el Tropico) and fabulous chile rellanos con camorones at Chirinquitos on Playa la Madera (especially when grandma is cooking!)
You really can not go wrong in Zihua!
