Why not buy from Amazon Mexico, or Mercado libre, they ship in Mexico

Whenever possible we buy locally or if that isn't realistic, we use Mercado Libre. When we can't get the item there, we go to eBay.

eBay is easy (selling on eBay bought us our house here). Many, most sellers offer shipping through eBay's Global Shipping Program. If they aren't using it just ask, it costs the seller nothing. Here's how it works: The seller ships to an eBay authorized vendor in Kentucky. From there the seller is clear of the sale. The vendor ships the items via the most reliable fastest method possible while taking care of customs and another fees that may be involved. When you are here wanting an item on eBay make sure your Mexican address is shown. Then the actual shipping costs are shown. Last thing we had shiped from eBay in the US was a down tube for a Hunter fan. Even with the fees it was less expensive than buying it on Mercado Libre and it was here in 3 days.

Last week I ordered a 14 inch stainless steel hook from Amazon. It's being shipped from the US via DHL for $3.69 and is supposed to arrive the 18th.

Lots of items on eBay that aren't based in the US are shipped free to Mexico. I have had lots of little weird stuff shipped from China, India and Thailand with great success. Remember with eBay if you don't receive it, you are 100% covered.

In 15 months we have not successfully received any mail here. The US Social Security Medicare people in Mexico City called yesterday, a Sunday with questions and said they had mailed me things. Nothing yet.

Of course, we don't expect any either.

No. What do you actually need to get via snail mail? Even in the US we weren't getting much, and it was all unnecessary.

That is why having the option to review the envelopes via an emailed image with USA Box is so important. You select and send only what you deem important at $35 per DHL envelope.

I get my mail from the USA just fine. Not much. But all the mail I expect has always arrived. At first I shared an APDO with my mother but soon after I had my own street address that's only changed twice in 30 years.

Any suggestions? Our house is very clearly named and numbered (correctly). DHL and FedEx have had no issues.

I had a friend who had a P.O. Box and he received mail with no problem. When I arrived here there were no boxes available and I was told to use General Delivery which never worked at all. Using street address did not work. Mail to U.S. OK for 3 weeks.

Suggest using hi tech (email, scans, etc) or DHL which is pricey.

If you aren't on a normal postal route then you may have mail waiting for you at the Oficinas de Correos. I don't believe La Ropa has a postal route or even a mailman. Just because your house has a name and number doesn't mean the post office knows you're there. Have you ever seen a mailman in La Ropa? You should ask at the Oficina de Correos if you can receive mail at your home.

We see the motorcycle postman go by periodically and just yesterday a car stopped in front of us then went into the Residencias Villas del Sol. So, I think we have service out here.

Guess we'll just have to go to the post office, wait in line and make our presence known.

Anyone know their hours?

We receive US mail from the motorcycle correo guy in Cerro del Vigia, on Col. la Ropa Escenica Road above Playa las Gatas. Timing is about one month unless it's sent express mail, then about 5 days.

So, did you go to the post office and let them know you were here, or did it just work out?

I'll ask the guards at Cerro DV how often the correo motorcycle guy comes, as he leaves the mail there and when enter/exit, we get it. He always arrives late afternoon. Maybe some day you could flag him down and ask him.

USA BOX - in Miami, FL Set up an account with them. You are assigned a Miami address with a Suite, Unit, Box number call it what you like. They receive mail for you. They scan the front of the envelope and email the image to you. You can then decide to open it and have it scanned and emailed to you. Or you can have it sent to you in Mexico.

The monthly service is $10 US. To open, scan and email an envelope to you is $10 per item. To ship one or a quantity of envelopes is around $35 US via DHL.

Works like a charm!

USA Box has become our address of record in the US - Soc. Sec., Credit Cards, Netflix, VUE, anything that requires a US address. We used to have cell phones registered to that address but it is so much cheaper to use TelMex with free calling to the US. Anything you do not want to keep or send down they will shred for you.

Oops, meant to say TelCel - 200 Pesos for 30 days, unlimited calling to MX and the US and more data than I can use on a mobile phone when out and about with WiFi in the home.

Hola
I Love TelCel. I take the SIM card out of my Android in Canada and leave it on the coffee table. I put in my TelCel SIM and get the 200 peso 30 day deal. I don't call out of Mexico but my wife does. It really saved our butt today. Had a problem with a local bank. Had to call Canada. On hold for 2 and a half hours. Finally got the problem resolved. Can you imagine what that would have cost on a Canadian or US plan?

Currently use my old I phone with a Tellcel SIM. Just pay 50 pesos maybe twice a month. Also have a magic jack which enables family and friends to call me while in Mex or me to call out. No charge to them if out of area code or national depending on their plan .

Question...... Havent really investigated this option (paying 200 ) but if friends and family contact me from Canada or US do you know how they are charged using this option.

Hola. Don't know about incoming calls. We never get them. I know that our calls to Canada are received as from Russia. Go figure.

When they call you they pay international long distance unless they pay the extra 5 bucks or so to call numbers in Mexico. Most cell carriers have a plan like that.

That was always my suspicion. Think I get more calls coming in than going out on the VOIP line . With family calls, they tend to be quite a bit longer , especially for the younger grandkids

The law in Mexico is "quien llama paga". But we also have no long distance charges in country. Many of our telephone and cellphone plans include Canada and the USA as if they were local calls.

I didn't see anyone address your question about Amazon USA. We have lived here for over 10 years and we have had numerous items sent by Amazon in the USA. They usually get here way ahead of the delivery date. You just have to choose items that ship to Mexico.

We get a fair amount of things sent via the local post as well as mailing items to the USA and we have had no problems there. We always go to the post office with our tracking number around the date the item should arrive.

We couldn't give you the number of the amount of expats that are down here but there are a lot. This number swells of course over the winter months.

That 14 inch stainless steel hook and eye I ordered from Amazon on the 6th, arrived today, the 13th for the US 3.69 shipping charge, DHL.

Better yet, I ordered on eBay 10 black hot pads that I really wanted, US 17.49 including free FedEx shipping. They were shipped on the 6th from Bopal, India and arrived today. Unbelievable.

Now to go to the post office and get our snail mail straightened out!
