Can anyone recommend an exterminator?

They're efficient but expensive.

Sheer curiosity, what critters do you have? We have been fortunate, and except for the occasional attack by leaf cutter ants, we have had nothing worth commenting on!

Large yellow and small black scorpions. And some big hairy Taranchalas.

Are you in a house or a condo? Do you have a gardener?

Condo. No gardener.

Exterminator NOT for Tarantulas!!!

But tarantulas are cool and don't hurt anything. When we get them we just shoo them into a container and take them across the street to the vacant lot. They are really really neat critters.

Scorpions, not so much....

I understand. I was just answering your question about what critters we have in the apartment. I generally pick up the tarantulas with a broom. They crawl right on. Then toss them out a window. However they are quite an uncomfortable distraction when one works it's way across the ceiling above the bed at night.

I'm not sure how targeted the different insect poisons can be. I'm learning. We definitely don't want to "bomb" the apartment. Unfortunately when the building sprays the common area the scorpions scurry under our front door.

I was so hoping that you'd answer like that! They are distracting, but entertaining.

We were able to find an ant poison that is pretty OK as poisons go, it's even approved for use in hospitals of all things. It says all crawling or flying insects. Don't know if it would do scorpions.

Try putting a dor sweep on the door, we did that and haven't seen a scorpion since, no spray needed

Great idea. I assumed they would slither under like a roach. Now the hardware store hunt begins! You want a what?!?

Our condo uses Servicop ...they spray 3-4 times a year . At home we spray twice a year as we have had a couple of outbreaks of carpenter ants ( in one instance it took 4 visits before they found the nest in a corner of the attic) and wasps building nests in areas too close to where our grandkids play . here it’s mainly cockroaches , though given the Peninsula construction debacle suspect it may also be rats .

Whatever he's using must be extremely toxic. I worked as an exterminator for a while during my college years, and there was no such thing as a "year guarantee" with only one visit. Do you know what pesticide(s) he uses on your place?

No idea. Ask him. Our manager tells me that he came back to re-spray for ants? that were dining on the wooden furniture. We have the spraying done when nobody's there. It would certainly be better not to have to spray, but if the other option is to have your house be consumed by bugs, we have it done.

Tarantulas

by Casa Juan @, Wednesday, February 13, 2019, 16:03 (242 days ago) @ ZihuaRob

I believe for quite a while they were exported to the USA as pets, don't think they are harmful in any way to humans and they eat a lot of other insects! Scorpions on the other hand are to be eliminated whenever possible.

perhaps I am experiencing one of the few benefits to being single in Zihua, I am not greeted by screams any more B-) when a tarantunla is spotted, I get to make the decision when its time to ask the critter to leave

Screams

Reminds me of a giant praying mantis on the railing of the balcony at the hotel where we stay. My son and I were getting a good close look when the thing took off flying around crazy. I hope the neighbours didn't hear our screams and squeals!
Likewise the middle of the night when a possum came sneaking into our room in Barra! Much shouting and shooing in the dark. Didn't know what it was then, but were told there was a friendly possum known locally to snoop around at night.
