I have a Verizon phone with Mexico calls added to the scope of the plan, most of the time its shifts to Movistar, but today it went to Telcel. After 3 tries to call a USA # on the Verizon phone, I tried my old I phone 5 that is converted to operate on a Telcel SIMS card , I recharge it on the street. I immediately got thru on my call to USA on the Telcel phone.
I understand dialing 001 before the area code or occasionally just 1 before the area code but do not understand why a Verizon phone would not work here.
Any ideas? Be kind if its pure operator error.

I have the Verizon plan also and use an iphone 6. I gave up trying to figure our hoe to dial both USA number
s and MEX numbers.

Most of the time I use wi fi calling as we don't get TelCel or Moviewstar as our location in Buena Vista.

To dial USA from here I sometimes dial 1 plus the ten digit number and sometimes I just dial the ten digit number. some numbers work by using 001 plus ten digits. After you figure out what is going on with dialed USA numbers then figure out why I must use one of the following on dialed MX numbers: +52 plus ten digits OR +521 plus ten digits OR 52 plus ten digits OR sometimes just ten digits. And it can be a cell phone or land line. AND I can dial almost, bbut not all, tollfree numbers jus like I am in the USA.

Yes, it gets pretty confusing.

I suggest you try this - not saying it will be easy...

Put a +1 before all your US + Canada-based numbers
Put a +52 before all Mexican landlines
Put a +521 before all Mexican cellphones OJO: DO NOT use 044-755, just +521-755-xxx-xxxx

I suggest you make the change on your contacts in your phone/computer.

What this does is tell your phone where the number is located and the phone operator will make sense of it.

Hope this helps!

He had to go to the US for a funeral and be gone for 46 hours. We needed to talk during that time. We bought me a cheap cell phone and SIM card that had 5 days of Amigo Plan, the US/Canada unlimited one. For our "normal" TelCel phone we bought 7 days of the same plan and he took it with him.

It took us 24 hours to learn the code for his TelCel phone in the US so he could call me here in Mexico. It was +52 1 and the phone number.

No problem calling USA from my Telcel, the problem is on Verizon and Movistar and the other second rate companies Verizon pig tails with to provide "Mexico service" I spent years calling from Alaska to Zihua and quickly learned in addition to the O52 a 1 was required to dial a cell phone.

I had the age issue when calling the US from my Verizon iPhone ... I found that I could call IF I went to my contacts and called using the contact link. If I just plugged in the numbers it would never go thru, no matter what I put in front of the number. However, I could easily call Mexico numbers just dialing the number. It appeared that I had connected to a TelCel tower vs Moviestar.

Yes. It you are using a verizon North America plan then put the phone number you want to call in your contacts list and connect that way. The conversion will be done. It works all the time for us over the past several years.
