According to the local rumor mill, construction on the new pier is scheduled to begin on May 6, the Monday after the fishing tournament. At this point everyone says they'll believe it when they see it, because we've been given lots of dates that came and went without event.

Also, local media are reporting that the Presidente cancelled plans for the Zona Económica Especial (ZEE) that was scheduled to be built in La Unión, the municipio where Troncones is. The Chinese had shown a strong interest in locating plants there that would not be subject to the normal regulations and taxes. Personally I never liked the idea, and I like the idea even less of shady politicians making deals with the Chinese. Western economies need to stop embracing low-priced Chinese goods until we are at least all playing the game on the same even ground. Of course, this puts pressure on the state and federal governments to come up with other ideas to stimulate the economy and create jobs.

Mexico Daily News is reporting that all 7 of the special economic zones that were to have no corporate taxes for 10 years were cancelled by AMO. All without any advance discussion with business groups. I suspect that several large property deals north of Troncones will unravel.

Yes, the Presidente is determined to eradicate corruption, and he saw these ZEEs as rife with problems. If you know anything about who the wheelers and dealers were on behalf of the government for the local ZEE then you'll realize the significance of what the Presidente did and whose ambitions were most likely hurt.

I say good call on the part of the Presidente. Questionable people were in charge of negotiating and there was never anything remotely resembling transparency locally.

I'll bet the mayor of La Unión is fuming right now.

One of the "economic zones" that was discontinued was in Puerto Morelos between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. People protested and fought over that one for the last several years. The Chinese wanted to dredge access to the land through reefs and fishing grounds so that container ships could dock at what is now a fishing boat dock. Then the plan was to fill the mangroves behind the village to build a giant distribution center. The filling would continue to widen the narrow road across the mangroves to 307 the major north=south highway. There would be no manufacturing to provide jobs for locals. Just a huge warehouse/distribution center for receiving goods and trucking them on to the rest of Mexico.

I really like what the Presidente is doing there. I just hope he does not become another political victim because he stepped on the wrong toe.

The great majority of Mexicans wish Presidente López Obrador success, but he's not going to have our support for long if he keeps lying and making up excuses for the things he does. Yesterday he claimed that he "consulted" with all the affected towns around the Sta. Lucia military base where he wants to build a new international airport for the metropolitan area of Mexico City and surrounding cities, but several of the affected communities at Sta. Lucia say he is lying, that they weren't consulted, and that they prefer their forests and their access to natural water instead of a noisy busy international airport. This is the same thing he did with previous "consultas populares" that were neither consultas nor populares. When, for example, out of 100 voters only one votes, that is not a "consulta popular", but that is basically what he's done with the project for the Texcoco airport and the Sta. Lucia airport and the Tren Maya in Yucatán. If he wants to make an Executive Decision then that's what he was elected to do, but lying to the people and calling it democracy is costing him credibility and support, and it's scaring away investors that we urgently need.

Come on, really? A politician lying. I thought that was reserved for North of the border. He got off to such a great start, at least that's what it looked like. I'm going to hold judgement a bit longer. Makes you wonder if the title "politician" is what corrupts good people.

While I'd welcome the creation of jobs, the idea of an industrial area nearby doesn't please me.
