Now that the world has calmed down, is there anything going on at the Cancha on Sunday nights? Food available, street closures, anything?

The food vendors will still be there although I strongly advise against eating there. Last week there were French flicks for free at the museum as part of a film festival. As far as I know Juan N. Álvarez street will continue to be closed each Sunday evening around 4PM and there will continue being cultural events except when there are basketball games. When the summer vacation period starts there will likely be some children's events at the zócalo as there have been during recent years. Unfortunately there's currently no way to know in advance what the events are since as far as I know there is no public schedule available to refer to. But the events have been much better during the current municipal administration than in past years.

The Gobierno Municipal de Zihuatanejo's facebook page is the closest I've seen to a source of info about upcoming events including this run tomorrow.

Avoid the food because it is taking business away from established restaurants or because of possible handling issues?

All of the above and more. All the vendors also use styrofoam cups and plates. No no no.

Oh come on, Last trip me and another person got food poisoning from 2 different resturants. I eat street food all the time and never had a problem.
So the little old lady selling tamales is using unsanitary practices for her customers and her family!

They weren’t restaurants that I recommend, were they?
Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa Restaurants
Food poisoning is not the runs. I spent years suffering the consequences of what eating “the wrong food” can do to you, Not talking about Hep. While I’m certainly no medical expert, this is something I feel I know more about than the average person.
But there are other reasons many of us wish folks wouldn’t patronize the food vendors at the zócalo.

It tends to happen some places more than others. Thus my comments.

Very dangerous information. Especially with all of the elderly people in the area. I watched a person who did not get this treated get airlifted out this year because his kidneys were shutting down. The runs IS FOOD POISINING . This from the CDC:
Food Poisoning Symptoms
Español (Spanish)
Food poisoning symptoms may range from mild to severe and may differ depending on the germ you swallowed. The most common symptoms of food poisoning are:
Upset stomach
Stomach cramps
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Fever
After you consume a contaminated food or drink, it may take hours or days before you develop symptoms. If you experience symptoms of food poisoning, such as diarrhea or vomiting, drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

Yes, thank you, Dave. I believe almost everyone except you understood my comments in the manner in which they were intended and no one’s health was endangered. Sorry about your friend. When I was affected by bad food here a couple of times 45 years ago one of the culprits was an oyster, the other a sandwich. The oyster had me writhing in pain on the floor for days. The sandwich had me on a strict diet and consuming medicines that looked like witches concoctions for most of a year, and every now and then it still drops me to my knees in pain. I don’t complain lightly about any pains, and I sure as hell don’t tell folks what to do without good reasons that may not always be obvious. Restaurants I list here work hard to prepare meals that are safe to eat. Oftentimes folks blame restaurants for bugs they pick up elsewhere, especially when they pass the day consuming alcoholic beverages. And most of the time it is not what should be called food poisoning. I didn’t intend to confuse anyone, much less make you feel it necessary to define food poisoning or consult the CDC.

Hate to say it Dave but I’m with Rob on this one, even though it kinda hurts to say that. Been at too many AI’s where they drink all day and write about food poisoning or tainted alcohol. What do you think is going to happen when you drink nothing but booze in the hot sun? Plus those pina coladas act as a natural laxative with the coconut milk.

You didn't really come to Mexico to eat hamburgers, did you? If you did try La Porteña or Mr. Lalo's or La Perla or Deborah's. Just tell them you want it flat and partly burnt with half the beef.

To this day I don't get the attraction to any burgers in Zihua, aside if you live here permanent or a long, long time. Sorry but Mexico was never a top destination for their beef. Most places if not all of them use frozen meat/patties. Some places make decent ones but nothing comparable to the juicy, fresh meat burgers you get in Canada and in several parts of the US. There are so many way better type of food to be had in Zihua/Mexico...

Sheeet! Y'all still thinking like first worlders. Ever wonder why sometimes there seem to be lots of street dogs and cats and then they seem to disappear? Used to happen every time one of those circuses with tigers and lions and bears came to town. Now I tend to worry more than ever about street vendors and oriental restaurants and their mystery meat.

You know me, I love pretty much all things Mexican, including those cart burgers. I cannot find anything like them here in the PNW. And as far as the beef goes, I think it has a big part to do with why I like them. The beef in Mexico may be tough, stringy, whatever, but it tastes like beef. U.S. beef, not so much.
There are a few things I make sure I have during a Zihuatanejo stay; pozole at Ricomar, chilaquiles at the Catalina, an ice cream from that joint over by the church, and one of those cart burgers. No trip is complete without all of them (not at the same time, of course). If that makes me ignorant, too Americano or something, I apologize, but my guess is that I won't stop

Their burgers were great and French fries HOT! Gotta have papa fritas with my burger.
