I have some friends that are reluctant to bring their 8 year old daughter who is a diabetic to Zihua. Are there any pediatric endocrinologists in Zihua?

I'm not sure, but at the risk of sounding cavalier and insensitive, doesn't it occur to them there are other children here with the same condition? There is at least one endocrinólogo here according to a quick internet search, and diabetes is a condition that too many Mexicans have. I recommend you or they contact Dr. Grayeb who would know whom to recommend.

I think the question I’d ask is how often she has needed to be hospitalized for her diabetes? If her DM is so brittle that she needs to be hospitalized frequently it could be challenging.

Hi Rob,
It sounds confusing, but there are two types of diabetes. The more prevalent in adults is Tyoe 2, and the more prevalent in children is Type 1, it is auto immune and currently there is no cure. Some physicians suggest these two conditions should not be named the same. Interestingly, the incidence of Type 1 diabetes is higher in areas with less sunlight (Sweden,Chile, New Zealand), with the exception of Sardinia in Italy. Care and recommendations for each type are quite different.

RC: have your friends reach me via email on the envelope next to my name. I suspect your friend’s daughter was diagnosed recently, and that is a very difficult time. She should be ok, if she takes the same precautions she takes at home.

Warm regards
BL

Thanks all. The diabetes is Type 1. The parents are overly cautious. They monitor her blood sugar throughout. No hospitalizations. I know she will be fine and if problems occur there is sound medical care available in Zihua. I have passed on all of the post to my friend.

I hope your friends come and bring their daughter. I’m confident they’ll relax and enjoy the time of their lives once they’re here. Saludos.

Hopefully the’ll go to Z. If they bring Glucagon and have snacks handy, they should be ok. It sounds like they need the rest and relaxation. Insulin works differently in warmer weather (more potent if you will), and I am sure their endo will tell them that.

Re: ..... "Are there any pediatric endocrinologists in Zihua?"

Hola RC:

Behind the Hospital General Bernardo Sepulveda you will find the "C.I.A.D"
=Centro Intregral Atención Diabéticos

I used to take my daughter there.

I don't know whether or not the following Drs. have the specific specialty you mentioned.
Though they all care for diabetic patients.

La Doctóra Lucy Olbera handles patients of all ages with that ailment at C.I.A.D.

Dr. Donaciano Valdovinos Valencia used to head the clinic, and is also a very good Dr.
Another expert is Dr. José Milián Calvillo
