Día de la Marina & Zih Rains

by ZihuaRob ⌂ @, Zihuatanejo, México, Saturday, June 01, 2019, 20:46 (18 days ago)

For some unknown reason the local Sector Naval broke with over 40 years of tradition and did not celebrate Día de la Marina publicly with local fishermen and residents. No explanation why. Boats and residents were all dolled up in bright colors to go lay wreaths and flowers at La Piedra Solitaria alongside local navy vessels in honor of fallen sailors, an event usually accompanied by lots of folks throwing buckets and balloons of water from boat to boat, but the Sector Naval instead apparently had some kind of private event. Oh well, possibly because of the mar de fondo and lack of a pier they didn't want anyone to take any risks.

The rains are here, though the big storm that moved up the coast from Acapulco last night fizzled right as it got to Zihuatanejo's bay. but it's just a matter of time. The prevailing winds have changed, and tropical winds are blowing out of the southeast. Everything changed rather quickly from mild days with relatively cool nights to hot and humid most of the day and night. Now we just need a few good soaker rains to turn the hillsides green again. Let the magic begin!

These two lovely women are very grateful for your donations that help them to see better.

Nothing beats the view from the Hotel Catalina! Especially while enjoying a delicious breakfast.

Zih Rains - follerup

As if on cue we got our first nice soaker rain last night, and if you’ve been paying attention to the webcams on my Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa Beaches page you saw we had a cloudy day that sure looked like it wanted to rain. Very typical for this time of year. Of course along with the cloudy skies comes the humidity. This is when it’s important to acclimate to the change or else you will simply spend all your time running from one air-conditioned environment to another. Enjoy!

I covered my tomato plants last night because of the frost warnings.

Need to leave the Arctic.

Ha ha ha! But the Alaskan arctic is melting, so I suspect he's much further south.

(Yes, I really do speak like that, but only in English) ;-)

Another night of long gentle soaking rain. The hillsides should be bright green with new growth by the end of the week. Nothing to see yet but gray cloudy skies, but hopefully I'll be able to post some photos soon if no one else does.

Until then, enjoy the webcams: Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa Beaches

It WAS wonderful! Here on la Ropa we got a very gentle 1.1 inches. We almost feel like we can see the hills greening up already!

I am guessing that will about do it for the smoke filled air?

I still smelled smoke in the air yesterday. But it should be subsiding quickly as the rains advance and dampen the brush so that it no longer catches fire easily. If I recall correctly, I believe I recently read that the Comisión Nacional del Agua predicted a 60% wetter-than-normal month of June for Guerrero. It's noon and still cloudy but not raining here.

¿1.1 inches? I'm sure you meant to say 2.79 centimeters, right?

See, there you go. "Give a man 2.52 centimeters and he'll take 30.48".

This sounds impossible, but our "test" hill is greener!

This morning after the rain stopped we decided to select a hillside and really watch it for color change. Honest to god, it is already greener than it was 10 hours ago!

Living in paradise never ceases to amaze us.

Give it a few days. You’re about to discover a new color we call “verde tierno”.
