$100 USD from airport to Thompson’s

by patrickherold, Wednesday, June 19, 2019, 15:47 (28 days ago)

I have read many different prices about taxis in the area.

My last trip to Mexico (Cabo in May); it was like $80 USD to get in a taxi and go about anywhere. It felt like a racket.

I have a quote from my hotel of $100 USD (plus 60% tax) per person from the airport to our hotel.

On this site I see a chart that shows $160 but the chart says pesos.

http://www.zihuatanejo.net/airporttaxi.html

Basically, I’m confused and kinda feel el hombre’s hand in my pocket already.

Can someone give it to me straight about what I can expect when landing at the airport for the first time.

gracias,

The latest gringo.

I'd like more specifics, please, on who quoted you those prices. Do you have their name? People need to be warned, and the person who quoted you such prices needs to be either corrected or called out. Was it someone who works for the Thompson? Are they in Zihuatanejo or somewhere else? And that 60% tax is simply nonexistent. It could give the impression someone could be working a scam with one or more local drivers. So, with your help, I'd like to get to the bottom of the matter and clear things up so that hundreds of other tourists don't get bad information that may even cause some to cancel their vacation here and go somewhere else altogether.

¡Saludos y bienvenidos! We really aren't a bunch of bad hombres. B-)

Thanks much for your reply.

My wife and I just called the hotel and asked them. We were a bit confused by the different things we’d read so just want to figure out the bottoms line.

So I guess from your reply, that we can show up with a few hundred peso in our hands and make it to the hotel?

Thanks for helping us understand what to expect better.

Absolutely! There are also three ATM's at the airport. It IS important for everyone to try to track down who gave you the bad information.

See you on the beach! We are out with our dogs very early right in front of you at 6:30ish for an hour.

Welcome to Zihuatanejo!

Keep in mind that the $160 pesos is for a "collectivo", which is a shared van, and there may be a wait until there are additional passengers. Depending upon how many people there are in your party you may prefer taking a private taxi ($600 pesos for up to 3 people) or a van ($1200 pesos for up to 8 people). In any event, it shouldn't cost anywhere near $100 USD per person.

A few years ago in Negril, Jamaica, we ended up staying in a very nice but more expensive hotel than we normally do. Taxi prices we were quoted to and from there were significantly more than we were used to from our usual accommodation, the perception being that based on where we were staying, we could afford (and would be willing) to pay more.

You can even pay with your credit card, but/and they will charge you the fee they get c charged, 3-4%.

And yes, definitely make use of the ATM at the airport and get some pesos. You will need them for getting around and buying stuff, and if you are inclined, for tipping.

This fellow paid $80 USD for taxi rides in Cabo. At a conservative 18 pesos per USD, that's 1440 pesos! Cabo cabbies must have thought they'd died and gone to heaven.

He thought he might have to pay $100 USD....PER PERSON!....for a taxi from the Zihua airport to the Thompson! PLUS a 60% tax! For he and his wife, that'd be....let's see....3600 pesos, plus a 2160 peso tax, that's 5760 pesos! They could both fly to Mexico City for less!

I'm sorry, but the original poster is either incredibly naive, or has spent so much time in the rarified atmosphere of places like the Thompson that he has totally forgotten the value of a buck......or he's pulling our leg.
Take your pick.

Or he is new to the area and doesn’t understand the proximity of the hotel to the airport. Seems niavity would be not asking that question before entering a city in a foreign country. guy wants to enjoy the Thompson for god sakes, let him save a few dollars for expensive beers ;-)

Can you let me/board know how the food or new restaurants are if you decide to eat there.

Please ease on up there and let's not be judgemental. Patrick took the time to find my website and ask a very good question. I'm inclined to give him the help he seeks, not an amateur psychoanalytical session.

Thanks Rob and everyone for your info. We arrived and followed the signs to the taxi ticket purchase booth.

We made a stop at a map of town with some “special offers”, but otherwise spot on.

510 peso for my wife and i to Thompson’s. Easy taxi ride.

Muchas Gracias.

Pat.

Patrick, I would like to be your personal guide. I can get you from the airport to the Thompson for about $95. We could stop along the way where I can get you a deal on beer for less than $8 a piece and a couple of $15 tacos if you're hungry.

Seriously, you were given some bad information. Use this site for any questions you have about Zihua as there are some well informed people here willing to help you that not only vacation here annually, but live here year round.

As for Cabo, IMO that is just a suburb of California owned by Mexico and should not be compared to Zihua in any way. Over priced and over rated. A great place for those who have too much money to waste and like to claim they have been to Mexico. More than likely after experiencing Zihua, you will never go back to Cabo.

The advice you have gotten is all good advice. But I would add one thing. When exiting baggage claim, you may be approached by people who will ask if you need a taxi. They are timeshare people (Zihuatanejo is not immune). Unless you want a timeshare presentation, don’t engage them.

As you exit baggage claim, turn right and you should see the taxi desk. Pay for your taxi ride in advance from this desk only. Outside, the taxi starter will take you to a taxi. If the driver helps you with your bags, you might want to tip him. But the ride itself is paid for in advance, at the taxi desk.

Also, you can pay for the taxi in dollars or by card but paying with pesos will probably save a bit given the card surcharge and the quoted exchange rate. As others have suggested, you can make use the ATMs in the airport for convenience. Most restaurants on the beach are pesos only, no cards. A few places in town take cards but pesos are the norm.

Patrick,

Our hotel is just above Thompson's on La Ropa. Our guests that have taken a taxi from the airport have paid around 550 pesos (aprox. $29 USD) to get here from the airport. It should be about the same to get to the Thompson.

We recently took a trip to Cabo and found it to be more expensive and less charming than Zihua, but we are kind of biased too ;-)

Regarding taxis, it might be helpful to know that there are two separate taxi operations. Those who deliver you FROM the airport, and all the rest. And the return trip is less expensive. Last time I paid about 500 pesos to LaRopa from the airport, and about 350 (including tip) on the return. For taxis around town, it's prudent to know the correct fare in advance, and confirm it with the driver before getting in. And have that amount in cash. Most will not make change, and if there is no baggage or parcels to handle, they do not expect a tip.

For LaRopa there are two fares depending on the distance. The dolphin fountain is the boundary. I believe Thompson's is beyond so you may be charged the higher amount.

That's why I offer the information on Airport Taxis and Local Taxis, in case you haven't already seen it.
