Laredo to Zihuatanejo

by Javier, Tuesday, July 09, 2019, 12:02 (7 days ago)

I know this topic has been discussed here before, I am planning on driving from Nuevo Laredo to Zihuatanejo next week. Last time I drove this was 2 years ago during christmas. Would like info on any safety concerns. Normally I have taken laredo to monterrey, monterrey to saltillo, saltillo to matehuala, matehuala to san luis potosi. San luis potosi to Queretaro. The GPS in now showing a different route, instead of san luis potosi to queretaro it is routing me through guanajuato. Just wondering if anyone has taken that route and is it safe. Are they toll roads? Any info would be appreciated. Thank You.

I just gave it a second look on my computer. Going on the "new" route google quotes 14 hours. It appears to be toll roads. There may be short stretches on connecting non toll roads. To the question of is it safe? I have driven from Laredo to Chetumal five times several years ago but given the current violence climate throughout Mexico I wouldn't do it again.

Do you think they aren't safe enough even if it's all toll roads driven during day light hours? Please expand on that. I hope to head down in January. Thanks.

Right now with all the Guardia Civil deployed along those highways to watch for migrants there shouldn't be any problem during the daylight hours.

Ya, as long as you're traveling south and not north.

What do you mean by that?

We have more driving miles under our belts in Mexico than we do in the US, mostly on major highways and toll roads, almost 200,000 miles worth.

Toll roads are extremely safe when driven during daylight hours. They are patrolled regularly and used extensively.

You will have a great adventure driving down!

I am extremely sadden by what is going on in Mexico regarding safety. Ten years ago I used to drive laredo to zihuatanejo 2 or 3 times a year, day or night and never encounter any problems. I stopped due to the increased safety issues. Two years ago I went during christmas because of the heightened police patrols and had no issues. Recently with all the news about crime levels being at an all time high is what has me worried. I have always enjoyed the drive and stopped along the way to visit family members in other areas of Mexico. Thank you for your input. If I go ahead with the drive I will definitely post my experience here to hopefully help anyone else that is thinking about driving down. Would like ti hear from someone that has done the drive recently.

We never did the Laredo to here run, but did the Nogales/Sonoyita run regularly. It has been just a year since we did it last. Very close friends from down the beach did it in December, going north and will do it again in September returning.

For more information you may want to explore other websites. For example the Good Sam Club and Woodalls both have forums about traveling in RV's in Mexico and Central America. They are a good source for current information during the season.

We have done the Nuevo Larado to Zihua new route through the state of Guanajuato many time the past few years. The new toll road is great. Just pay attention and use MAPS or your gps. We drove it in mid May and encountered no problems. We enter and leave at the Columbia International bridge
