Mobile data in Mexico?

Hola amigos!

My partner and I will be visiting Zihuatanejo next January/February for the second time. Last time we were there, we absolutely fell in love with the place. My only gripe was not having accessible internet at all times (Necessary for my job).

I've been doing a little research, but I'm still quite confused as to what my best option is for the time that we're there. Should I sign up for roaming through my Canadian carrier, or does it make more sense to get a Mexican simcard for use while we're there?

I know I have heaps of time to get this sorted out, I'm just asking now so I can have all my ducks in a row rather than leaving it until the last minute (Which is what I usually do...)

I apologise if this question has already been asked and answered, I couldn't really find too much on it in the forums. Many thanks for any help you can give me.

I think coverage is a combination of your location and your carrier. We have t-mobile and everything worked fine in Zihua last year, but on a side trip to Oaxaca service was really spotty. Oaxaca is in a mountainous area, so no real surprise.

If Mexico is included in yourphone plan, you are probably good to go, otherwise there are a lot of posts on this site regarding burner phones, SIMs and the like.

Lots of Canadians visit Z, so someone probably has expreience with your particular plan.

Mobile data in Mexico?

Hola
When I first came to Zihua about 15 years ago I bought a cheap TelCel phone. Still have the same number. Now I buy the TelCel sin limite plan for 200 pesos a month for unlimited calls to anywhere in Mexico, the USA and Canada. Also includes a data plan that I have never exhausted.
I have quit my Canadian plan and just use my Mexican phone in Canada. It is a little difficult to get incoming calls, but I don't care. 14 CDN dollars a month for all of the benefits is hard to pass up.

Same experience as Victorio. Bought cheapest telcel phone 20 years ago. Same phone # since. A few hundred pesos annual recharge does us for our local phone needs for the winter season. Free calls to Canada. For data/internet requirements we use an IPad. Get a telcel simcard. Data only plans very inexpensive. 3 GB in 3 week increments about 200 pesos. Works great.

I use the 3 GB plan with unlimited calling in North America as if it were all local for $399 MN p/mo. It's more than most people need, but I can run my business with it in case my Telmex internet service fails for any reason or I find myself working out of some other location.

Also, in the first week of August it will no longer be necessary to dial anything other the the 10-digit number for any Mexican telephone. This may have been the problem one person mentioned with receiving calls in Canada. All calls using any phone will be 10 digits.

I checked the cost of using my phone in Mexico last January before we left Canada. $15 per day, I think it was. Outrageous. More per day than a month of Mexican service. So I went straight to the cell store when we got off the plane and bought a sim card and it was great...service and convenience and cheap. 79 pesos for a card and 200 pesos for a month of North America free phoning and I think 1 gig of data. The phone must be unlocked before you leave home.

Good Day. I agree with Altona Stu. Our Virgin Mobile travel option is ridiculous per day. We were in Zihutanejo two years in row and both times e-mail and outgoing calls were non existent ,which was part of the plan. They tried to fix the problem on their help line but that was futile. We now have a older unlocked cell phone and plan on buying a Mexican sim this coming Zihutanejo holiday. Hope this all helps. Good luck in your query.

We use ATT with unlimited calls and text- our new plan offers unlimited data(were on 15 gig a month). Will find out in January if the unlimited data works in Mexico. If so can use the cell as a hot spot for a lap top.

I wanted to switch my shop number to a spare cell to be able to help my former customers- what a hassle for it took about 5 days because you were dealing with the cell phone rep, the business rep and the transfer rep. When it was done, my plan went from 15 rolling G's to unlimited and because I had been in the Air Force during the VietNam era I got a discount. So now the 4 cell phones are just a little more than what I was paying for 3. I like using the cell phone as a secure hotspot for our laptop when traveling- years ago you had to pay for a hotspot that had it's own number.

My two cents if this is your only data source get the plan with the most data, it will be half price of canada at least. Should you plan to stay longer you may want to dump your plan at home, and maybe move on to speak out 7-11 where you dont need a plan and you can port and keep your number.
