As we begin our yearly search for plane tickets (which becomes more difficult every year) we are finding that it s almost impossible from the Philadelphia area. We can get there but we have to spend a night somewhere on the return which is really not feasible. Last year it was United that messed us up - this year both United and American are offering no flights on return that don't involve an overnight. Anyone have any other information? My heart is breaking to think that after 18 years of yearly 3 week visits we are going to have to pass up this beloved family :-( vacation.

Might I suggest you do what we've had to do. Cut your stay in Zihua short by one day to accommodate the layover night on your way back.

This isnt everybodies cup of tea, but you could fly to Morelia or Acapulco and bus it. The bus system is day and night compared to home. and you would have a side trip you may have never taken.

We drive to Missoula, spend the night at a motel where we can park the car for 3 weeks and get a ride to and from the airport. The next day we fly MSO - SEA - LAX and spend the night there at a motel. The next day we fly LAX - ZIH. When we lived in Anchorage, we'd leave at midnight, change planes in Seattle and LAX, arriving that afternoon. While ANC - ZIH is about twice as far as MSO - ZIH, it was only $50.00 more per ticket. The return to ANC required about a 6 hour layover in SEA; about the same as returning to MSO. A pain in the butt, but still worth it.

We fly out of EWR on United every January. I ALWAYS book an overnight on the way down - whether in Houston on CDMX. I prefer Houston as there are more daily flights. This is all in case of inclement weather on the departure date. Our return is always a same day connection.

One year, I stupidly booked a same day connection for our departure. We had a HUGE snowstorm and our flight was cancelled. We lost 2 days as a result. I couldn't get my money back on hotel in Zihua and the travel insurance didn't cover it!!!!

There is only 1 flight per day from HOU to ZIH. That's why it's so important to get to Houston & why we fly down with an overnight - - in case of snow, we can get to Houston a couple days in advance so not to miss that one flight!!!

There is only 1 flight per day from Chicago to Zihuatanejo, at 8am. but you really don't want to go thru ORD in January.

There seems to be only 1 flight per day on weekdays on Aeromar from CDMX - there may be 2 on Sat/Sun.

You can get a same day connection on your return, but the flight arrives EWR at midnight - then you've got the drive.

What are your travel dates??? I just checked United out of Philly on Sat. 1/11 - - there's an 8am departure thru HOU that arrives ZIH at 2:47pm...and that flight is there pretty much every day of the week!! Round trips as low as $534. I don't know what the mileage flights are like but a RT for under $600 is pretty darn good!!!!

Just for the record, the Chicago flight you mention is the only non-stop United flight and it flies only on Saturday during season. But there are many other flights out of O’Hare to Zihuatanejo. Aeromexico, Delta, Interjet, American and United all offer flights with connections. Volaris also offers a non-stop during season. Not all flights are ideal in terms of time and layover but there are multiple options and price points.

I won’t deny that Chicago can have bad winter weather, like many places that have winter weather. But we have been coming to Zihuatanejo for over 30 years, twice a winter, and never had a cancellation or missed connection because of weather. We have had close calls trying to get through Houston but never in O’Hare. But your experience may vary. Maybe we just have weather karma.

sorry for the confusion - there are more flights to Houston that's why we do the overnight rather than a same day connection. we leave in the afternoon so not to have to get to the airport at 4:30am....and we have the option of earlier flights that day or days prior to get to Houston. We don't want to miss the flight to ZIH!!!

As others have suggested, why not just cut your stay one day short to accommodate the overnight? We fly from Seattle, and although we could make it in a day, we always overnight in LAX so we don’t have to take a very early flight from Seattle. We use points so the hotel stay is free. We'd do the same thing on the way back if we needed to. Even if you have to pay for the full 21 days and only stay for,20, it shouldn’t be that big a deal. Am I missing something? FWIW, nonstop LAX-PHL leaving at 10 Am mid February, $158. Overnight in LAX. You can do round trip for around $720, overnight in LAX both ways. With Alaska credit card which costs $75, you could use companion certificate, so 2nd ticket would be $121, so $915 for both tickets which includes the price of the card. You’d also have about 40k Alaska miles which would make one of the tickets free the next year.

Yes, that is our conclusion also. However, we have lived there in the past and even easy flying into ZIH is not enough to make me live there again.:-) Sorry Houstonians.. no offense.
I do appreciate everyone's comments. There are many logistical problems that I didn't mention at first (there are ten of us, we arrive and leave on different days. the added cost for several hotel rooms and dinner :-( )
My husband and I have planned to stay a night in Houston - mainly because last year United changed our departing flight to Philadelphia- 20 minutes in Houston which they said was a 'legal and doable' connection. Really?? But if we can't get our family there it's moot.
Anyway, thanks to everyone. My heart is breaking.

There are direct flights to Zihua from Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal. Since maybe 90% of Canadians live within about 150 miles of the US border, that means most of Canada's population isn't far from a direct flight to Zihua.
(Maybe that's why the place is crawling with Canadians?)

I don't claim to have inside information on route decisions at the airlines, but I suspect it has something to do with the stricter warnings issued by the U.S. state department regarding Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo.

I have voiced that opinion!!! Thank you for validating.
I have been told by an airline representative that the decisions about flights are based solely on profitability. But.... since the travel warning was issued - first to Guerrero excluding Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo and then including these areas as well it has become more difficult. I guess it is what it is...but....
I think we will look at the Cancun area...to me (as I think I said before) it's not real Mexico but its better than no Mexico.
Again, thank you :-) to everyone. You all are so helpful - you are what makes the area great!!!!

This is true. In my travels all over Mexico, I found it a bit shocking that in Zihuatanejo, at least, Canadians heavily out number Americans here. You go to other places in Mexico (think Cancun/PDC, Mazatlan, Cabo, heck, even Chiapas), and there's hardly a Canadian tourist to see. But, tons of "Ameicanos." I guess Canadians are more into "real" Mexico (like Zihua) than (most) of us gringos.

What we do, soon as we get home in Feb to book our r/t for the following year because of the few flights available at good times are hard to find. We drive to Chicago for they have a Sat direct r/t. We monitor the flights, usually we book the return first because they have a leg at 17.5 K air miles each (35k for 2 versus 70k), then when the when the flight down goes to 17.5 we book it. Some friends are wanting to join us the first week of Feb and it is hard to get good flights at both money and times- the cheaper flights are with a overnight flying r/t out of Louisville or Cincinnati. This has worked for us for years. 1 time we waited and to get a good flight, we flew into Morelia for a couple days( had a wonderful time) and the caught the express bus to the coast. If you have never been to Morelia, January is the perfect time to go see the Butterfly Reserve.

Last time we were down, about a year and a half ago, we booked our vacation based upon Alaska's ability to get us there in one day. They didn't start the flight times until November 3rd, so we vacationed starting November 3rd. It's getting so hard to get a same day arrival that it's a consideration on whether or not to vacation in Zhihuatanejo. Sucks!

As I said... it is breaking my heart. For all these years (17) we have dealt with the two flights, missed connections, overnights in Mexico City, overnights in Houston, etc. But now it's becoming close to impossible. The scheduling is so tight that the least little problem guarantees that we can't make the connection. As I mentioned above, we make our reservations well ahead of time but that doesn't help when the airlines change the flight times after we've committed. I'm wondering if the airlines are basing their decisions on the travel warning?

We can fly nonstop to Cancun from Philadelphia... it's not "real Mexico" but it's better (in my mind) than no Mexico:brilliant: .

Not sure what your schedule is in Jan but if it involves Saturday departure, try Phil to Toronto then direct to ZIH ,Do it one way using Canadian Expedia site ,not US . It involves a 6:00 am departure but you should have plenty of time to catch the 9;40 AC flight direct to Zih . Not sure how it will handle US credit card but if it does conversion will be about 77 cents to the US dollar Global entry will help a lot clearing Can customs

Then book one way back to Phil again using the Can site

I assumed the 11 th returning Feb 1

Have you considered buying a ticket to Mexico city and then booking with one of the national airlines for a flight to Zihuatanejo out of Mexico city? I have used this strategy a couple of times from Seattle and found that I can make my journey in one day to Zihuatanejo. There is some risk if your first flight is delayed or cancelled since the flights won't be connected. I just did a quick search from January 8-16 and found flights starting at $376 USD round trip to Mexico city from Philadelphia and then tickets to Zihua, round trip, are usually around $150 USD with several options from different airlines available. I prefer Volaris or Interjet.

There is NO way to get to ZIH from Philadelphia or Baltimore or Washington non-stop - a fact of which we have always been aware.
I really do appreciate everyone trying to help but the airlines have slowly over the years made it more and more difficult. As I said, we have several logistical problems but they have never made it this difficult in the past. We love the area and are very sad that this is happening.
17 years ago, if it had been this difficult we would probably never have gone.

Houston is one of the few that get me there with only 1 stop. The problem is connection time. In previous years, I could fly out of PHL at 5 AM and have several hours to connect in Houston. Now, the earliest flight out of PHL is 8 AM which means connection time of 1 hr 15 min. And no way to make it home in one day. I miss the good old days when Mexicana had a direct flight PHL to MEX then on to ZIH.

Yes, Of course. We always connect in Houston or Dallas. Getting there is no problem - it's getting home. United (Houston) has made the connection time impossible - 20 minutes??? Ha!
American and United seem to be cutting flights because of the Boeing Max issues, maybe
I said at one point on here that we are 10 people - however, we don't all come and go at the same time and sometimes from different airports here on east coast.
I realize that our logistical wrenches are not the airlines problem - but, again... it seems to be getting worse by the year. And.... why are there so many ways to get there from western Canada and not from this side of the world????
I do appreciate all the help.

Generally airlines won't sell a connecting ticket if they don't feel confident you'll make the connection. They try to avoid unnecessarily pissing off their customers that way. But beyond that most airlines have established, behind the scenes, a desk specifically to facilitate connections. In the real world that means that, if you're running late, they'll hold the plane for you, perhaps as much as fifteen minutes. Maybe more. And if you're travelling with a party of ten, that gives you a whole lot of leverage. They'll hold the plane forever for that. I'd say go for it. And don't worry so much. You're on vacation.

We face the same problem here in Milwaukee. This is what we have learned over the last few years. Traveling to Z is not near as much a problem as returning the same day. A few of the +1 options you see arrive shortly after midnight ,so it doesn't require a hotel room or night in the airport.

There are more flights on Saturday than any other day of the week. More crowded airports, but more choices.

Use two different airlines or routes each way. We often take United down and Delta for the return. ZIH to Mexico City to Atlanta to Milwaukee.

Use the travel sites-Expedia, etc. and a travel agent. Travel agent usually charges $35 but they find things we can't.

I just booked my ticket last week. Average coach ticket this year looks to be about $1000 from here.
