Schoolchildren with their parents and early risers were treated to a crazy display of drugged drunks howling karaoke this morning at the bar next to Coconuta, and as far as I know they're still at it. Police never responded. Not a peep from the local government. But hey, they're pouring concrete everywhere they can and getting their photos taken with Por Los Niños who apparently still doesn't understand they are being used for political gain. What's a poor downtown resident to do? Where's a good bazooka when you need one?

We woke to cloudy skies and a light rain this morning. Oddly, there were tire tracks on the beach where a vehicle drove out and got stuck in front of Daniel's Restaurant. Since the police have stopped patrolling at night and don't respond to phone calls I guess anything goes now and all the drunks know it. Our poor Zihuatanejo is suffering and severely lacking in leadership and governability. Something we all need to call attention to and demand a solution for if we want to continue expecting to live from tourism, especially the kind with the economic purchasing power we need.

Opinions on these matters are more welcome and useful here than in my e-mail inbox where no one sees them but me, so please speak up if you have something to say.

The mar de fondo and passing storms have severely damaged the piers at Playa Linda (where a huge crack has split the structure) and at Playa Las Gatas whose pier was closed for safety reasons last I heard because no one is maintaining it. A real shame to see things in such condition less than two weeks before a cruise ship arrives. We only get one chance to make a good first impression.

Today is jueves pozolero. ¡Buen provecho!

Scenes like this will always be my favorites. This is the essence of our Zihuatanejo.

Three pilotes can be seen on the floating structure ready to move into position. The Flexifloat has been repaired, so I'm guessing a crane will again be placed upon it as soon as the current weather system passes this weekend.

If you look carefully you can see there are now six pilotes in place.

I thought the "NEW" police were in town????? is turning out to be quite a disappointment

The new police seem just as unresponsive as the old police. Calling 911 is like a bad joke.

Yes, see the coming weather system I just posted from NOAA's 5-day tropical forecast.

I am so disappointed in police response. A couple of weeks ago we called the local police to report people illegally dumping their trash in the areas below our land and blocking a dirt road that gives us access to the lower portion of our property. Firstly we had to call 3 different times before someone picked up. Once we explained our complaint they said they would send someone. 30 minutes later no one had shown up and we called again. We were told that there was a shift change happening and no one could respond immediately. Of course the dumpers left without anyone ever showing up and as far as I know no law enforcement ever came by to check it out. I understand that my complaint isn't necessarily life threatening and there are people with bigger problems but I am sorely disappointed that no one could be bothered to show up or even offer any other kind of assistance. It is great that there are all kinds of improvements happening around the area, but as Rob said, if we don't have anyone enforcing the laws or protecting the citizens we will eventually lose our tourism industry as well.

Really sorry you had to find that out the hard way. You've invested in our community. You attract the class of tourism we need. You pay taxes. You deserve to have the police respond in a timely manner when you call them, not to receive BS excuses.

As a followup to the howling woman who finally called it quits at 9:00 a.m. that morning, she walked by the folks drinking coffee on the sidewalk at the Café Caracol on our ground floor, who of course had been listening to her torturous howlings for some time, and she had the audacity to say something like "if you don't like it you all can go somewhere else." They all looked at her astonished she would be so brazenly rude, but no one said anything. What do you say to a meth head or coke head wired out of their mind? Well, I'm not so shy but that's not the point. This is part of what our local government is allowing by emitting all these bar permits then not policing the bars.

I know that if you mention gunshots the police will show up approximately 40 minutes later, if that's any help.

The citizens had really hoped for better with the arrival of the Guardia Nacional.

Maybe you heard that three of them were killed in an ambush in another part of the state yesterday. The president said he'll have to rethink his security strategy so that it doesn't happen again. In case you were unaware, all the police and military have essentially been under orders not to use force of any kind even when provoked. A few months ago in Michoacán after police confiscated a cache of arms including a .50 cal Barrett a group of civilians took a platoon of soldiers hostage and threatened their safety if their weapons weren't returned. The weapons were returned and the hostages freed. The military has since said it will not allow itself to be put in such a position again. basically telling the president to let them do their job and stop exposing them like helpless babes. The public supported their statement.

Welcome to the Cuarta Transformación.

Paz y amor y muchos abrazos.
