To those of us who knew Bruce Dodson from Santa Rosa, California and previously from Guernville, Calif. he died today after many months dealing with interstitial pulmonary fibrosis.

He was a gifted watercolour painter, raconteur, slightly argumentative, generous and genuinely nice man who did so many small favours to make new visitors vacations more interesting. He loved turning people on to lesser known places like the lagoon of Valentin and the stunning beach on the far side or the old woman who cooked fish lunches at Saladita.

He enjoyed Zihuatanejo for many years, drinking his morning Fanta at La Perla, going for his swim, perhaps lunch at El Manglar then back to his rented apartment on Adelita Street to paint and sell his work across the street from Cafe Adelita, a favourite breakfast spot along with Cafe America.

God bless all the people who serendipitously cross our paths and make a difference. Treasure the knowledge gifted by them.

I have several of his paintings in both my Zihuatanejo home & my Vancouver home. They are always noticed
& complimented. Bruce’s awareness of his terminal diagnosis did not stop him from wanting all the best for those left behind. I send condolences to his family, his friends & all who knew him & his art legacy.

Thank you for giving the information about Bruce. I think you hit the nail in the head about his character. Bruce loved Zihuatanejo and I am sure he will be remembered for his love of music, his beautiful watercolour paintings and his kindness.

How could I forget his love of music...and dancing?! In his last month he went to a restaurant in S.R. where they would sing opera mostly but other genres...he would request a favourite of his and accompany them (with his portable oxygen tank) and was so pleased.
