Zih Pier Construction Two-Step

I feel bad for the engineer in charge of overseeing the pier reconstruction, because it seems like one thing after another has gone wrong to foil his plans to have the pier rebuilt by December. I think it's quite apparent by now that isn't going to happen. One unfortunate setback after another has plagued this bare-bones effort. To a lot of people more knowledgeable on the matter than I, it appears the politicians siphoned off so much money from the budget that not enough was left over to do a first rate job, and Zihuatanejo deserves better than a third rate pier that won't be as well built as the one that was just demolished. The politicians who took a percentage of the budget for themselves should be made to put that money back and hire a first rate marine construction outfit with the proper equipment to get the job done, because what we have now is an unfortunate comedy of errors. Their equipment keeps breaking, the barges keep sinking, and one delay after another now has us in October with only six pilings driven. This is not the fault of the construction engineer or his crew. They're doing the best they can with what they've got. But folks witnessing this on a daily basis can come to no other conclusion but that the reconstruction will take another year at the rate they're going, and the quality of the construction will only suffer when politicians try to make them meet arbitrary deadlines for photo ops based on arbitrary and obviously unrealistic expectations. We want a quality pier in Zihuatanejo that won't crumble apart at the first earthquake or big storm. And we don't want to see money wasted on cost overruns caused by forcing the contractor to use inferior equipment and methods because the politicians had to get their cut of the budget, a common wasteful and corrupt practice that needs to end.

That's my rant and I'm sticking to it. Yes, I know some folks aren't going to be happy reading this. They are welcome to comment here and to correct me where they believe I am in error. Public discourse on such matters is good for the community. But so is shining a light into dark places so that the cucarachas run and hide.

I appreciate the information Rob, I really feel for the captains and businesses who make their living from the water taxi and fishing charters.

Thanks for your photos, we can easily see the pilings from over here and in the bay, but not the things causing distress. Thanks for sharing.

Looks like we have our first cruise ship for the season on Saturday. Weather permitting, we'll paddle around it.

Hopefully something very positive will happen with the pier. I watched a dredge catch fire and sink in the mouth of Channel Islands Harbor in California in the early 1970's. The officials hired two guys I knew that had been trained as "commercial divers." After several months, they couldn't do much to get the hulk out of there. The officials finally hired a real salvage company. A week later, all was removed, the harbor entrance clear, and in the end, less money spent.

Crossing fingers that something similar will happen here.

@Zihua Rob:

I for one do appreciate your what you called a "rant" at the end of your comments. NO error made or correction needed at all.

Telling, as the late Paul Harvey did, "The rest of the story", and NOT ignoring reality, and/or explaining "la otra cara de la moneda", although it may not be too pleasant, I.M.O., is better than being "kissie-kissie", and pretending things are so nice, as a few users tend to do on your board, when in reality they are NOT so nice.

This is one reason why we listen to Sergio's program "Zona Libre"
He tells things like they are, no bluffing or "kissie-kissie" to the local supposed "authorities" as is done on a few other local radio stations.

Saludos.
