Casa Maria Asilo

Hello Rob!
I was confused last week when suddenly donations were being made to my GoFundMe page for the senior home in La Noria. I was grateful but I had not recently solicited funding through that site. US donors are now able to write checks to my church to receive a tax deductible receipt.
I quickly posted an update to the page and hope the donors have seen it, we have accomplished much in just a few years.
I would like to briefly tell your readers that each week we supplement payroll and provide fresh produce and protein for better health and nutrition.
As you know, the new local government and DIF have been at work in Zihua for just over a year now. Liz has listened to the complaints my group and I had about the horrific condition of this facility under the former administration; she has worked to make some serious changes, one of which is rehabbing (and new construction) to an existing property nearby! If all goes well the residents will be moved before the end of the year. The name of the residence will change, but the name of our group will remain.
I would like to refer anyone who is interested, to join the FB page I created a few years ago.."Friends of Casa Maria Asilo" and very quickly we became a group to be reckoned with. You will find detailed information on our site.
Last February, before DIF had mad a firm commitment to move the residents to a building far more appropriate, we raised funds to replace the existing roof that did little to protect the residents from the rain. These funds will now be diverted to assist in completing the construction, as needed, under my direction.
Thank you to all of you who so generously help us meet our commitment to provide love, compassion, better health and welfare to a very needy group of at risk seniors.

Thank you, Deb, for your informative reply and for all you do to help these elderly folks who have no family to care for them as we traditionally do here in Mexico. Retirement homes are the exception, not the norm here in Mexico, and here in Zihuatanejo their funding is woefully inadequate.

If you’ll provide me with your preferred method of receiving funds from Mexico and abroad I’ll get it listed here in my website.

Also, I see you are using a different name for your organization than the actual name of the facility as it is known here in Zihuatanejo, which is fine I guess, but I’d just like to clarify that here the facility has been known at least up to now as casa del asilo “María Auxiliadora”. I’m unaware of any change of name by the current symbolic head of our municipal DIF Lizette Tapia Castro, but I’ll keep an eye out for her office’s announcement.

De nuevo, saludos y muchas gracias.

Good Morning Rob! Thanks for your kind words and support. For 2 reasons, my preferred method in receiving donations is a check sent to my church 1) the donor will receive a tax deductible receipt and 2) I receive 100% of the donation. This is not possible for everyone and I certainly welcome any donation, in any manner, but I lose a portion of the donation in commission or fees. GoFundMe is very easy and may be the best method for non US residents.
A check can be sent to:
Cary United Methodist Church UMW
500 First St
Cary IL 60013
memo: Casa Maria

As for the name, you are correct. That name was given to it by the former Board of Directors, which no longer exists. Its management now is only by DIF, which has turned out to be very beneficial to the residents. I'm not sure if the final decision has been made in the renaming but it will not include Casa Maria and will include DIF. Of course, there will always be needs the government cannot meet. This is where "Friends of Casa Maria Asilo" enters, we assist as we can, understanding that we must be respectful of a culture that is different from our own.
With your permission I can post occasional updates on your board for your readers who do not use Facebook.

Of course! That's what this Message Board is for!

Thanks for the clarification! I sure hope the ayuntamiento holds up its end of the bargain. City administrations come and go, and to date there has been next to zero continuity in any area from one to another.

¡Suerte y saludos!
