The lower house of Congress has approved steep hikes to two taxes that foreigners pay to enter Mexico, triggering criticism from business groups that are urging the Senate to vote against them.
It's a increase of 630 pesos, up to 1,265 pesos, when you come in by air. See following article in Mexico News Daily.

That's the Mexican way, isn't it? What do you do when increased lawlessness looks like tourism might take an understandable hit? You do the same thing Mexican hoteliers do when tourism revenue lags......increase prices.

Is that what it is? Looks more like politics to me.

I don't expect this will be passed as is by the Senado.

if passed the new law would make a permanent residency status more worthwhile for those here on extended stays. I have found with Alaska Air you have to be diligent and request a refund when your trip starts. The tax is automatically added to the fare and Alaska Air has not trained its staff to recognize the exemption. I carry a carbon copy of the a prior tax refund request which I have been told is one of the few transactions they still do on paper.

In the "old" days it was interesting to pay the tax in Mexico on departure out of the country.

Can you say more about requesting "a refund when your trip starts".
As a new permanent resident who flys Alaska can you tell me the procedure?
Thanks

Edited- just got the information.
Present the request at time of check-in

Even easier- I don't have the e mail address anymore, but I had to do it twice in February.

Just e-mail Alaska, tell them that you want the UK refunded because you are a legal resident of Mexico. Attach a photo of your residency card, and your flight information. Mine were paid, non refundable flights and they immediately refunded me. No talking to a human, no hassles, nothing.

You have 12 months after the ticket is purchased to request the refund.

I just "chatted" with an Alaska "support" person.
She notified me I could only fax or mail the request in.
I asked about an email address and she couldn't come up with one.
If you find it please let me know.

Didn't save it, not going back to the US. It was in Feb, and the messages are no longer there.

Save your voice, find their e-mail address and ask them where to e-mail it. I did, they provided it, I passed it around.

I am not sure how fair it is to say this is a "mexican" way.....

Amsterdam tourist tax hikes

Tourist taxes in U.S. cities and states

Canadian taxes on tourists

Governments around the world often find taxing people who don't have a vote an appealing way to raise revenue.

I don't think it's promoting an urban myth to suggest that Ixtapa/Zihua hoteliers and other merchants often seem to defy economic common sense by increasing prices in response to declining revenues. If the politicians are now proposing the same peculiar response, is it unfair to then call it "the Mexican way"? Are the politicians in DF suggesting that drastic tax increases will increase tourism? I doubt the other jurisdictions you've mentioned face the same "challenges" that Mexico tourism faces.

Did you read the article? The lawmakers in the Cámara de Diputados are trying to raise funds for a pet project of Presidente López: el Tren Maya. That appears to be the purpose of the increased tax. This administration and the ruling party Morena don’t appear concerned about foreign tourists. When I still lived in Florida I don’t recall state lawmakers there worrying about foreign tourism either. And we certainly know The Chump administration doesn’t care much for foreigners, especially non-whites.

Who cares. If 1,265 Pesos keeps one from visiting maybe they could drive down to the Redneck Riviera and attend the annual mullet toss. Florida or Bust!

There has been a fair amount of chatter on the board relative to complaints on airfare prices and difficulty in getting flights to ZIH
If this goes through, on a macro basis it will likely have a negative effect on the number of ‘northerners” coming here . Dont assume that the airlines would amortize their pricing taking into account returns . They will stick it to tourists fully on the trip here as often the return trip can be with a different airline .

Such a price increase is nothing other than another impediment for tourists to vacation in ZIH

The price will affect all of Mexico, not only Zihau, so I don't imagine there will be much averse effects on one place more than on the other

RE Canadian tourist taxes: most of those are taxes Canadians also pay - Federal and Provincial goods and services taxes. The former replaced a manufacturers' tax. All are somewhat controversial but aren't most taxes? Is this too dull for a Saturday night?
