Schwab VISA debit card

by NYCJulia, Friday, November 22, 2019, 08:22 (14 days ago)

A friend who arrived in Z this week wrote us that she was unable to use her Schwab VISA debit card in an ATM as “they were no longer accepted.” Since we rely on our Schwab VISA debit card for access to cash during our extended stay every year, and we’ll be arriving soon, we wonder if anyone can share relevant recent experiences similar in nature. Thank you.

Thank you Rsimms. Did you use the card recently, withdraw money? And did you use it at more than one locale?

Schwab VISA debit card

Thank you frostbite. I called Schwab this morning and they have no information about this problem anywhere in Mexico. My friend tried 4 different banks in Z, received assistance from bank employees, and card went OK until they tried to withdraw money, then got message to the effect “cannot complete this transaction. Try again later.” Now I’m wondering if there is some imperceptible problem with their card. They were told “banks no longer accept “international cards.”

Whenever I don't get the info I need, I ask to speak with a manager. That usually works. Good luck.

Thank you, frostbite, for your input. Did just that...went to mgr. My friend is out right now with spouse’s card to see if there is a “compromised card” issue. Will report results back to Board.

I just returned from Zihua and used my Schwab debit card twice with no problem - first at the HBSC ATM at the airport and a few days later at the Banorte ATM in El Centro. No problem at all either time. I did do a travel notice with them prior to leaving the US. Maybe that's the problem.

Thank you, Querty, for your reply. Good idea. Will ask friend right now if they informed Schwab beforehand, which we always do.

Just got back from the Banks in Ixtapa.

Tried 3 different machines at Bancomer with my Charles Schwab card and it said I had 0 peso available to withdrawl.

Went to Santander and had no problem with my Charles Scwab card

Thank you, Marty, for your response. My friends just confirmed they, too, were successful with Santander. Don’t know what’s up w Bancomer. My friends DID NOT advise Schwab in advance of their trip; they travel a lot and evidently don’t check with Schwab beforehand. Our experience is that we ALWAYS call Schwab in advance and give them our dates. EVEN THEN, we have been locked out a couple of times, both in Berlin, Germany, when I had to call them to unlock the account even though they admitted their records showed we had alerted them as to the dates of our travels.

I just got off the phone with a Charles Schwab guy in card services and he has heard nothing about problems with Bancomer

You are probably aware that you can also set up Travel Notices online with Schwab.
Also from Schwab website:

"More Information

Please check the expiration date of your debit card prior to submitting this Travel Notice to ensure the card does not expire during your travel time. Always check for any suspicious activity and immediately report that activity to Schwab.
Travel Monitoring is designed to monitor for fraudulent activity when travelling internationally or domestically with a minimum inconvenience to you. When travel monitoring is active, we continue to monitor the card for high risk transactions.
Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. processes account documentation on behalf of Schwab Bank."

You can also set up Travel Notices for future travels.

Thank you, Mosesk. I was unaware of that possibility. I will share it with my friends as well. Wd make life a little easier. I remain a strong believer of notifying card banks and companies of our travels. Last year while in Z, we received a call from AMEX asking if we had just purchased items at a gas station in Maryland. I referred them to their records which clearly showed we were in Mexico. They immediately canceled our card and sent a replacement by messenger THE NEXT DAY!

I thank it depends on bank. I have a ETrade debit that I use when we are traveling and there is 1 bank I can not use it at, the ATM across from Any's. My card is not a Visa/MC but a bank ATM. It seams it works everywhere else.

Thank you Paul, that’s a very good point! For years we have had no trouble with the Schwab card in Z, although we’ve had some problems with the Citibank card, because of some corruption.

January 11th will get to see if our card works. Soon as we get checked into Villa Mercedes if our room isn't ready yet because of catching direct flight from Chicago we head to Any's for lunch- (part of the routine) and then catch a taxi to stock up on food before heading back to the hotel.

Thanks, Curbarn, for that good advice. For those of us who have successfully used the Schwab card in Z for years, a question arises as to whether anything has changed. Schwab claims they know of no problems in Mexico. Is there a Schwab problem in Z, and is it something new? For us, we’ll be there in 41 days, so as we move closer to that time, I’m confident that Schwab card users in Z will continue to report their experiences on this helpful bulletin board for all of us to share.
