Pack of dogs

There is a pack of 4 or 5 dogs that have been running up and down the road to La Ropa since New Year’s eve. They are emaciated and running all over the road. It is only a matter of time before one gets hit by a car. Is there anything that can be done? My heart hurts to see such suffering.

Yes I see them all the time also. I have no idea what can be done. I don't think they are approachable. Is there any place or person that can help? The humane society? I don't think there is an animal control here and then even if there is, if they catch them, they will probably be euthanized.

There is a supposed "Animal/Canine Control" office headed by Dr. José Ángel Macias in a small buliding in front of Calle Gema, on el Paseo de La Boquita, just below el Parque Lineal.
His cell # is:
755 111 9905

user opalnoir can try contacting Dr. Macias, but I doubt that she'll receive the help required to take care of the situation.

I don't believe that Dr. Macias' staff actively goes out to catch street dogs, and "euthanizes" them anymore.

I have contacted him about a serious problem, which also concerns a pack of (at times ferocious) abandoned street dogs, that has been going on for around 3 years en la colonia Lázaro Cárdenas, on several occasions, with ZERO results to solve the problem.

This pack also seems to guard the new litter of puppies near the road. I was able to get one and take it to Kristina (sp?) at SPAZ where it will receive his proper shots, get dewormed and in time,nudored/spayed. She said the chance of adoption is excellent. There is at least 5 more pups. I have a photo, but knowing how to post it is another thing. He's a real cutie.

Puppies, Thanks!

Thanks for what you are doing and caring. We live on la Ropa, and if we can help, let us know.

Have to ask: How were you able to get only one puppy?

Again, thanks so much!!!

The litter "nest" used to be close to the sidewalk, but some people decided to put food and water in it so the mother (I guess) moved the litter back further into the bush. I stood outside the little opening and threw in the odd kibble and whistled a bit. One finally came out far enough to grab. I figured one was better than none. There are at least 5 left, but it is very dense bush and the rest of the pack is quite protective.

I am a dog lover BUT there are just too many loose unneutered stray dogs in Zihua. It gets out of control in Colonia Las Mesas then one or two "disappear. Humanely taking some of these strays out of the shallow canine gene pool here would be an improvement. I am really surprised I don't hear or see young children bitten by the strays in my neighborhood, Las Mesas. I have never seen any type of animal control here except self initiated. If I want to walk my dog on a leash down on the cement street, I carry a long piece of 2 inch cpvc as a walking stick to protect my dog.

And, for protecting yourself from abandoned street dog attacks?

I just witneessed, (which happens almost every night here) at around 2:53 a.m. at least SIX mostly large size abandoned street dogs ATTACK a man walking down the street by himself heading for the pedestrian bridge to the pier from la colonia.
And another one that was a block away saw it, and ran down the street to join in on the "fun" those dogs have on a nightly basis.

"Cute" huh? :o) ....those poor little doggies :ponder:

SPAZ has a trap you could borrow if that might work. But good work getting even one puppy! Euthanasia is the kindest move I think. The life of a homeless dog is a very sad life! Especially for the female dogs. When they start attacking people, something must be done!!

As sad as it is, I agree the most humane course of action is euthanasia (by a vet...). Unfortunately I just returned to Canada but I am still sufficiently upset by this to want to try to help the best I can. At this point in time, not being in Zihua right now, I can only offer monetary support. If someone wants to do something about this, I’m all in.

When we rented in Ixtapa before building in la Ropa, the golf course was filled with dog packs. Some packs might be too dangerous to approach, then it's best to contact Animal control. He's more knowledgeable about how to apply muzzles and collars for transporting. He'll come out and try to separate them, in order to pick up one at a time. Always good to give him a tip or a donation for office supplies.
