Update on Zihaut

We are unable to make it down to our favorite winter paradise this year.

How is the renovation coming along with Paseo de Pescador? There was good progress being made this time last year but still a lot of construction.

I was also wondering if anyone had information on the condo development that was going up across the street from Aura del Mar? The walls were up last time we were there. We were hoping to take a closer look at this property once they get them done.

Thanks in advance for any information!

If this is your favourite winter paradise, you should be able to spell it:

It's "Zihua".....not Zihaut.....not even Zihau....nor Zihautanejo.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Let the criticism begin.

The Paseo del Pescador was finished last season and is lovely.

The old pier was completely removed, and the new one is coming along well and should be finished in the next couple of months.

The north tower of the Sotavento is almost gone, and should be gone in another week at this rate.

We live on Playa la Ropa and have no idea about condos on Madera.

Supposedly the name Zihuatanejo is derived from the Nahuatl word Zihuatl, which is pronounced Zeewa.

A more accurate depiction of the pronunciation would be "Seewa" ....the "Z" is pronounced more like an "S".

It is indeed a Nahuatl word though a few educated locals argue a different Purépecha version that I don't agree with.

Zihuatanejo comes from Cihuatlán, the name of the region in pre-columbian times.
Cihuatl = woman (pronounced SEE-wattle)
Tlan = place (pronounced just like it looks)
Nejo - (pronounced NAY-ho) a Spanish diminutive added to denote "of little importance" by one of Cortés' men when he reported back to him after being sent to scout the region. Zacatula was the part of our local region that most interested Cortés and his men at the time.

Wow! Thanks for that.

I keep meaning to write a brief history of our region in English as well as in Spanish. I've read several excellent books and texts in Spanish by local and regional historians as well as folks who relay their own local histories, and of course I've heard lots of lore. My wife's family alone has several hundred years of interesting history here. One o' these days...

How do you like the summer months down there? Not sure I could deal with the humidity but I imagine everything slows down which would be appealing and you get used to the climate.

Summer is wonderful. The temps go up about 5 degrees F during the day, and the nights don't drop below 80. The humidity during the evenings through mid morning is the same as now. During the day it's a little higher, but not noticeably. The water temperature goes way up.

Yes, we have a weather station.

The rain, almost entirely at night is great. Very rarely does it go later than 7am. We got 53 inches last year yet things drain very well. We get loads of thunder and lightning, and the sunrises and sunsets are even better than this time of year.

The tourists are different and just as entertaining as they are this time of year.

And to answer your other question on the Madera condo, it is at a standstill, no change from last year.
