Hi All. From Zihu,we've been south as far as about half way to Acapulco & north to Troncones sight seeing, in past years and are wondering if there is anything worth exploring further inland ?
Thanks

The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, Patzcuaro, TzinTzunTzan, Morelia. This is just what I've seen. Sure there is more that I haven't.

Just got back from a 3 day road trip around small part of Michoacan.
Highlight for me was the Parque Nacional in Uruapan- the most thrillingly artistic display of water I've ever seen.
Missed the Monarchs since we didn't get to Morelia.
But did make the pilgrimage to Paracho- I'm a guitar player- but they specialize in classical and flamenco there, which is not my bag.
Santa Clara del Cobre was an eyegasm of Copper.
And driving around lake of Patzcuaro was pretty OK.
I'd been to Patz before- a visit to Janitzio was the highlight for me

Ive really wanted to visit the park. How did you get to parque nacional assuming you left from Z/Ixtapa area? And would you recommend a one night trip if only doing parque. Thanks

We did a 3 day loop
Spent first night at Lake Zirahuén
Second night in Patzcuaro
Third day in Uruapan and Paracho and back that night
You could go up and back in same day but I’d prefer to linger

We did a r/t to Patzquaro in one day- not enough time. There is so much to see in the area. We decided to rent a car at the airport and did 3 nights at a hotel in Patzquaro. The hotel manager(returned to the states) did day tours around the lake and visiting some of the little villages. Each village had a craft to sell. One that is known for wood carving, Kathie got a Madonna that she cherishes and another village is known for pottery and she got a vase with the history of the area. You can drive to the villages your self but you need a guide to take you to the artisans for their studio/home is not along the highway.

Contact Carlos Garcia at www.tourswithcarlos.com. He took me to the park and Patzcuaro, even handled hotel reservations.

Doing Patzquaro, I feel you really need a guide who knows the area and the artisans. It almost felt like being on a Cruise being taken to studios in the different villages. But these artisans had their studio in their home and some had come to the States to work and save enough money to start their own business. One had a young American intern learning the trade. Most had their awards they had won hanging on the walls- very impressive and worth the cost of the tour.
