Can I play too? (new kid on the block)

Hi folks, been reading this board for a while and thought I'd introduce myself. My name is David and I live in San Diego. I am beginning to dial in my retirement plans, Mexico is at the top of my list. I have vacationed there many times over the years. I spent some time this summer exploring, I spent all of July in PV/ La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Sayulita/ San Pancho and Melaque/ Barra de Navidad. I fish and so boating/ sportfishing amenities are essential for me as well as good access to productive grounds. I did like both La Cruz and Barra but neither impressed me as a place I would actually want to live so I came home a bit disappointed. A few more hours of internet research and I got curious about this previously unknown (to me) place called Zihuatanejo. I live 20 minutes from the CBX Tijuana terminal, I was in Zihua the next day :)
Wow! Instant "aha" moment, I pretty much fell in love, I felt "at home". I only stayed 8 days but felt it was the spot I was looking for, don't even really feel the need to explore further.
So a little background... I lived for 3 years in Miami and 11 years in the Caribbean, mostly St Thomas in the USVI but also spent a year on the tiny island of Anguilla. Tropical life suits me and I want to get back to it. Believe me when I say that 2019 Zihuatanejo is WAAAAY more developed and cosmopolitan than 1990 St Thomas so no fears of "missing" the amenities of Stateside Life.
I do speak a little Spanish, good enough to get by as a tourist but plan to improve on that over time. Depending on how much more I work I anticipate a monthly budget of roughly $2500US disposable, so a modest life but I'm okay with that.
As much as I dislike the idea of being labeled a "snow bird" it only makes sense for now, I'd like to spend next winter in Zihua, maybe Dec/Jan/Feb. My work is project based so I can't pick actual dates, it will be last minute so I'm guessing I will pay a premium for housing. Would love to lock something in now but just can't do it. The other option would be to find something so ridiculously inexpensive that I could just rent it year round and then come and go as work allows, the flight is under 3 hours and costs alomost nothing.
Anyway just wanted to say hello and let you know I am coming, always willing to pay a bar tab to bend the ear of a vet and get some high quality intel.
Job I'm on now is scheduled to end maybe around July and while i'd rather keep working 'til November you never know, I may be there sooner than planned :)

Get your butt down here and work on line or quit!

Grew up on the other Silver Strand Beach, left there 3 years ago for here. Lived on South Caicos for a while in the 70's.

I knew you'd be along. I smell trouble. Or... what is that smell?

I finally understand why Knopfler has sounded so depressed the last several years...

While they guys are busy recalling the old days.... you should enable your email on this site so folks can contact you in private. If you scroll thru the first thread, you'll find instructions. Then you will see the little envelope behind your name at the top of your post.
I'm planning on spending more time in Z in the near future as well. Maybe see you on the beach!

E-mail enabled, at least I think so. Especially interested in hearing from those who fish or have a boat and want to fish. I will be bringing knowledge, experience and all gear necessary - just need a boat. Also will cover gas, oil, beer and lunch ;)

You can get a boat guide and equipment here for inshore fishing for about 500 peso's

offshore for Tuna and Sailfish for under 1000 peso's.

I see a thread here on solar, thought I'd mention that I am an electrician by trade with a few years experience in both residential and commercial grid tied solar systems. Also played around with off grid systems and set up my camper van pretty nicely. When I get there I suppose I can't spend every single day fishing and relaxing on the beach (or can I?) so I'd be happy to help out with any DIY solar projects. I'm not bringing any tools though so that would be on you :)

How reliable is your power? Be aware that grid tied solar systems don't do anything if utility company power is out, I mention this because a surprising number of people don't understand that.

When our grid tied solar system was installed (in Montana) I was told that, in the event of a power outage, our system would automatically disconnect from the grid and we'd continue having "home made" power during the day. At night we'd have to crank up our generator. Fortunately, in the 6 years we've lived in our new house, there have only been 2 outages, and they happened while we were in Zihua.
