Please try to speak as much Spanish as you can. It's not a joke to us even if you are unsure or make mistakes. It's our language, we think it's beautiful, and we appreciate folks learning it to communicate with us. Enjoy and expand your vocabulary. Try to learn a song or watch a TV show, even if it's only a soccer game, news or a children's show. That's how you learn it.

As Talley Ho pointed out, Monday is the Paro Nacional de Mujeres. Please be respectful and understand what brought this about. Mexican women are fed up with being abused, mistreated and seeing their sisters murdered just for being women. They're fed up with men not taking the problem seriously to stop the abusive and violent behavior by their brothers. The gota que derramó el vaso was the poor if not disdainful reaction recently of the government when the subject was brought up at one of the Presidente's morning press conferences at the Palacio Nacional (he does them daily). No one expects all women to participate, but remember this is no joking matter. Many women will be participating in spirit only because of practical matters, but I'll venture to guess most of the country supports this. I know I sure as hell do. Although Lupita assures me she won't abandon me for the day, I've got my beer and chips in case drastic measures are necessary and I have to remember how to feed myself.

This is my kind of eye candy. El Cerro Viejo. As long as I can see this distinct old hill I know I'm right where I belong.

:megusta:

We live here full time. We had semi decent Spanish when we moved. I just completed day 421 in a row on DuoLingo. He just finished day 346. We are doing our best to use the language of the country we live in.

Realize that when we had comida with Rob and Lupita and he said, "It's Spanish only!" I was a bit tense, but it worked. Practice is everything.

We just attended our very first Spanish movie, a kid flic, Sonic. We thought we understood it adequately until we downloaded the English version. We had missed several major plot items.

We will be attending ALL of the kid movies now!!!

Another side to the language issue: I have enough Spanish to "get it over the net" as needed. But when a server or shopkeeper greets me with excellent English, I take is as a sign of respect for me as their guest. I feel that it would be insulting to subject them to my fractured Spanish.

As a long-time or permanent resident in any foreign country it would certainly behoove one to make an effort to learn the local language. As a visitor for a couple of weeks, not so much, IMOH. And then there's also the problem of not having an ear for language. At my first job at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco in 1962, there was an Italian waiter who moved to the States before the war, whose English was barely understandable.
