Covid -19 Mortality Rate

by Chas, Wednesday, March 25, 2020, 09:10 (7 days ago)

We see a lot of different mortality rates bandied about and I’m curious if someone on this board could clarify. Covid-19 is a new virus so we do not have historical data. We’ve been told many people will contract the virus and be asymptomatic. While we have reliable numbers on how many people have been killed by this virus we don’t know how many people have actually been infected. Without a large number of people being tested for antibodies how can we know mortality rates? Thx

It is likely you would get more reliable information by googling than posting on a message board, which is likely to have fewer experts.

So you want to know the total number of deaths / (comfirmed + unconfirmed) ? If so you cant know because the unconfirmed are...well...unconfirmed.

Covid -19 Mortality Rate

There was a great article in the WSJ yesterday ( or the day before) , from 2 Stanford Instrucors of Medicine. Basically extrapolating numbers getting infection rates in small samples of people ( not just testing the very symptomatic or Hollywood stars) The death rates could be off by an order of magnitude because of the people that have limited symptoms that are not tested. Lack of testing skews the death rate much higher than it most likely actually is.
