In the past we have seen a toad every few months. In the last week, we have seen one every day, all different ones, in different sizes.
Years ago in Acapulco a traveling companions dog licked a toad only to find out that it was hallucinogenic!!! He had a really wild night and was fine the next day.
I don't plan to do any toad licking (probably) but who knows something about these??
Your traveling companion's dog was lucky. For dogs, they are deadly without prompt vet intervention. Ask any local dog owner who cares about his animal.
The vets' solution is an injection of dexametazona (2ml vial) in the rear leg muscle ASAP. I now stock some in my frig, as the farmacia and the vets were closed in my hour of need. She fought a good fight for several days, but had to be put down in the end. Too little too late.

I am so sorry to hear about that. Sorry to ask, but can you buy that stuff at the vet? How would you administer it? Do you know the type of toad? Once again, my deepest condolences. It's really tough losing a good hound. Makes me wonder why I keep having one....or two. All the best and thanks for sharing that. It must not have been easy.
The toads common name is cane toad. They are not unique to Mexico. The med. is injected via syringe. Farmcia Simi carries it and it is cheap. The vet stated that if you didn't see improvement after administering the med., give another one. Problem: I don't recall what time period was mentioned for noting improvement. Check out the following:

There was a huge one when we used to stay at Eric Fernandez' Casa Loma Bonita overlooking Playa La Madera....the size of a large dinner plate. We worried we'd step on it in the dark.
I'm not at all for killing them (as are others), but I go wild when my critters alert to one in my enclosed grounds. For my 4 legged friends, it is AVOID ALL CONTACT! For people, I have no FACTS to pass on, only the usual bla-bla-bla.
We saw a couple of the dinner plate sized ones in Chiapas. These look very much like the ones we had in California, the largest one, this morning, was maybe 3 inches long.

are you asking about the hallucinogenic effect?
Lots of info out there- DMT.
Also Kambo- frogs, etc
I just want to know about the common ones here.
Keep them away. They can kill your dogs.
We aren't going to kill them, and we sit on a quarter of an acre.
They are well trained, and know Leave It very well. They also know they aren't supposed to touch, eat or pee on anything that is alive. Hopefully they will remember that!

Hi..saturday at 6am one of my dogs had a sap encounter.
She started frothing at the mouth. I googled what to do..washed her mouth and eyes with a hose. Helped a bit but the frothing continued.
Put some charcoal powder in with her food..she wouldn't touch it.started to panic. 7.30am called the vet..said to mix limes with milk and give to her. Only had almond milk..used that with 2 limes. She brought up the poison.. Worked like a charm. She ate her breakfast with a tsp charcoal.
So it sounds like make them vomit, then continue.
Hydrogen peroxide is the easiest and best to make anyone/thing vomit.

Straight up??
Yes, big dogs like ours, 80 pounders, pour a tablespoon or two down them, walk them around to mix, and soon they will lose everything all the way down to the tips of their toes.
Great in an emergency situation, but you will feel very sorry for them, even with their misdeeds.

We had an incident with our Duck Toller when she was a very young puppy, a few years ago. My partner and I always smoked a joint before bed in those days. Now we're into edibles. I had just rolled up one and left it on the hearth of the fireplace while my partner had her nightly bath. When I went back to get it, it was gone! I searched high and low and couldn't find it. Our puppy was acting normal and wandering around, so we decided to give her a mix of warm water and salt. It worked and five minutes later she threw it up! Scared both of us. Never did that again! (left it where she could get it)

We had a couple in our back yard that luckily my dogs never caught. Why the charcoal powder and where do you get it? Gracias.

Charcoal or carbon polvo as it's called over here stops toxins from being absorbed in the stomach. It's good for humans and pets after eating something not too good as well as treating diarrhea. It has cosmetic benefits for humans too. I get the powder form from Tienda Organica in Zihua on calle Higos just off from La Boquita. Tablet form is available from any of the Pharmacies.

Thanks. Appreciated. Once again, thanks for this board Rob.
You may find the following website useful for identifying frogs. It isn't perfect but it is the best source I have found. We currently have the good fortune to have a frog that has chosen our pool area to live. We aren't sure what it is but we think it is a Guerreran Stream frog. There seems to be quite an interesting variety of frogs around us.

Thanks for that website. If I had to guess, ours was the Incilius Perplexus. I took a picture, but it's just on my phone. It also was capable of leaving a pretty good pile of caca on our patio.....Have a good night everyone.
