Modelo Group announced Sunday it is shutting down all beer production in Mexico, as beer is not considered to be an "essential" product under government protocols issued under the Covid-19 threat. The National Chamber of Industries said in a statement beer inventories are sufficient to meet normal demand for a month.

Hmmm... What about Coca-Cola? Essential product?

I don't know if this is a good or bad idea. I switched to Coke from beer a long time ago, even 'tho I know all the bad stuff about the product and company. It is my guilty pleasure/vice. Some day I will become a 'water totaller'.
Here, they have kept liquor stores open, citing the medical dangers for addicts if they can't get it.
What I can't figure is Ontario shutting all their pot stores. We need all the country's pot stores open. We need the tax revenue! How else are we going to pay off the mounting debt of propping up the economy during this time? ;-)

Booze and weed is deemed essential in the USA and Canada

Parts of Canada are even giving out free opiods to the addicts too !

These are great days to be an addict !

In Ontario, the government makes money from alcohol sales.

This from September 2019.

“Ontario Cannabis Retail Corp. lost $42 million in the latest fiscal year, according to newly released public documents.”

It was meant to be a bit of a light hearted joke.
But since you mentioned it, I looked it up. There are only 25 cannabis stores in Ontario. The provincial gov't there really took a long time to get any legal stores up and running. In contrast there are almost 700 liquor stores.
Maybe we'll all have to drink more to raise enough tax revenue to pay our debts!

We should be so lucky that the Modelo Group has enough of their

Vitamin "C"(erveza) " C "(orona)

to supply all the bars who are NOT COMPLYING here in Z that remain open for business-as-usual to serve to los borrachitos :vacation:

Apparently their vitamin " C " IS an "essential" item :snicker: at least here in Z.

Prohibition of mood-altering substances is tricky business. It seems easier to shut down beaches than bars. The government has already placed several key hospitals under the direct control of the Army, National Guard, etc. Thinking must be, if folks anxious over Covid-19 take to the streets, best they not have beer on their breath. As nature abhors a vacuum, prohibition promotes smuggling; can´t we just imagine flats of Pabst and Miller High Life being floated south across the Rio Grande?

Re: "Prohibition of mood-altering substances is tricky business. It seems easier to shut down beaches than bars "

Apparently so it seems is the case here in Z "Paradise".

Beer can easily be consumed EN CASA.
No "prohibition" to drink Vitamin " C " (erveza)

While it is understandable that bars, or WHATEVER business wants to open for economic reasons, I.M.O., they should comply accordingly, with whatever the local or National Mexican government stipulates.

Saludos :-D

This is how it has always been here in Guerrero. Imagine how much worse it would be if no one said anything. Sometimes “winning” is more subtle in a lawless land.

I remember years ago buying mescal that was made with a minimum of government involvement from a guy in Zihuatanejo. It came in a two litre pop bottle and was something like US$10 equivalent. I was too cheap to risk the money of buying the whole bottle so I split it with someone else.

When I got it back to my house i discovered it was the best mescal I have had.

I expect some of those operations might return soon.

Ernie, I believe you are referring to "Señor Gunnusack". I used to buy from him all the time as he walked the bach. I have not seen him for at least 3 years. Probably retired up there in Vallecitos, where the mezcal came from. On a good note, there is now another gentleman that hangs around Calle Juan Alvarez, near the Police sub-station by the cancha. He's not there all the time. My friend has bought tequila from him but I personally have never met him. But his tequila is excellent and as good as Sr. Gunnysach's used to be. Probably comes from the same mezcalera in Vallecitos. Cheers.

Breweries shutting down ?

In the USA many breweries / distilleries switched to producing hand sanitizer. Apparently the process is similar, and essential. Most are distributed at no cost. They’re providing a much needed service and building community support which will result in more profits down the road. From a marketing standpoint, very clever. From a humanitarian standpoint, admirable. Just a reminder... Stay safe. Please use hand sanitizer constantly, and whenever possible just stay home.

Ron Bacardi, Grupo Modelo and Genomma Lab are just a few of Mexico's industries that made a similar effort using their facilities to produce gel to donate to the government.

Officials here tell us that handwashing with soap is the best way to keep one's hands clean. Gel for when you're on the street without access to a washroom.
