Before allowing entry Soriana is now asking how old you are. We were both asked.

We were told by a friend that if you are over 60 you may not enter.

Instead of restricting seniors from entering the store, if they really wanted to help, ask the customers if they are with an immune issue or are they diabetic or other health issue, which really is non of their damn business. By looking at a lot of the seniors here in Zihua, a lot of them look healthier than a lot of these unfit young people. If they want to restrict seniors ,split the day in half, let the seniors have the early half of the day

In Zihuatanejo as in most of Mexico, seniors generally live at home with their family. This is one of many cultural differences between the Anglo-Saxon culture and the Latino culture. Dr. Hugo López-Gatell and his team factored this into their modeling for the spread of the pandemia in Mexico. In Mexican households younger members are being asked to do the shopping and to run the errands that must be done.

After a major outbreak at a popular supermarket in Iguala this week, it only makes sense to us here that Soriana would take this step even though there are many retired foreigners here. For most Mexican families this is not a problem. Foreigners here can call a service that will do their grocery shopping for them, except they try NOT to shop at the big stores but instead at the smaller locally-owned ones.

BE PROACTIVE - DON'T JUST COMPLAIN! Call the local Manager. Call the company headquarters. Contact whomever you know who is influencial in Zihua.

Rob could help with this. Don't just explain Mexican culture to us. Also please explain "Gringo" culture and expectations to influencial folks you know in Zihua.

The same end could be achieved by special "senior" hours. I heard that Bodega was doing that - early hours for only seniors to shop.

Please folks -do something positive to achieve a better end!

Great to hear, but what about the sign at the door? It's on FaceBook and we saw it this morning. It says no old people, no pregnant ones, and no kids.

We were questioned about our age this morning and just plain lied. A friend who didn't and confessed to 66 was not allowed to go in.

So glad she called. Thanks!

They're trying to keep the business running without affecting vulnerable people in the population. The large chain stores are where outbreaks are most likely to occur as they found out the hard way in Iguala this week. They're trying to save lives.

I just came from MEGA. They asked me my age...I told them 58 (a white lie) and they told me I couldn't go in. They didn't bother asking me for ID because after I told them 58 they told me you couldn't go in if you were over 55. Pretty soon seniors will be everybody of 20 years old if this goes on. Where do they get their authority to do this.
I also phone Sam's Club. The only acquirement is that your wear a face mask. No age restriction.
Still looking for a phone number for MEGA so I can give them a blast. They should have special hours for seniors like they do in many place.

iWe gringos who are healthy and can afford to buy all the food we want should be more resourceful and less whiny. Adapt and find someone to do your shopping for you or go to more than one store So many people are really suffering during this pandemic, lost income, spotty health care, no schools. Adjusting our shopping habits should be a no-brainer. The mayor and others making these rules are doing their best to protect everyone and by the number of local infection so far, doing a pretty good job.

Good points, all. People who opt to retire abroad, and cross a "cultural line" in doing so, should be prepared to ditch some of their life-style assumptions. Not everyone can get there; it`s tough to do for older folks, no doubt.

Most "older persons" in Mexico live with their family and can send the younger members to shop and run errande. Nothing absurd about this. It's part of the modeling being counted on by the Subsecretaria de Salud Dr. Hugo López-Gatell and his team of extremely qualified epidemiólogos.

I’ll try to not say something stupid about this situation.
But let me point out that as of about a week ago most of the checkers were not even wearing masks.
Also remember they let the baggers go early on because of age.

And a final thought- Mega is more than food.
I’d probably have to go to 3 or 4 small shops to get what I pick up at Mega- light bulbs, USB cable, etc
Rob- you have presented a rational explanation for the policy and one I would not have thought of.
But it could have been implemented in a better manner..
Frankly I was surprised a couple of weeks ago when I saw a small sign at the new Waldos inhibiting the over 60s
But it wasn’t being enforced so I took it rather lackadaisically.
But Mega seems serious

I think any calling and complaining should NOT be done or fomented by foreigners. Businesses and authorities are already quite occupied adjusting to difficult circumstances and don’t need their burdens increased by a minority of otherwise privileged people.

Understand your point of view entirely. That said, if other food retailers have set aside times for seniors shopping, as reported elsewhere on this thread, it seems not unreasonable that Soriana might follow that lead. Recently retired ex-pats, unilingual and unicultural, feel threatened not only by the virus, but also by their food supply. Tough spot, for everybody.
