I always knew it as Emancipation Day. In Florida it's celebrated on May 20. In the U.S. Virgin Islands it is July 3. This current celebration arises from Texas. It'd be nice to see it made into a national holiday.

The June 19 announcement came more than two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. So technically, from the Union's perspective, the 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were already free—but none of them were aware of it, and no one was in a rush to inform them.

If you'll look into other Emancipation Day dates you'll see a similar pattern, including the Emancipation Day celebrated in some eastern Kentucky counties. Many weren't notified until as long after the end of the Civil War as possible.

Of course the prison system quickly became the new legal slave trade, filled mostly with black people.

There is an excellent Netflix film that documents the rise of the American prison system from the enactment of the Thirteenth Amendment until today. it is called "13". It is part of Netflix's Black Lives Matter series.

The movie "13th" is also available free via YouTube in the United States. Not sure for how long.

I am loathe to admit this. I never heard about this day until this year. I was never taught about it in school.

Neither were we. When we moved to San Francisco in 1974 it was a annual celebration.

Not sure where you read that, but not yet. However lawmakers in many states are working on it.

I am like you, had never heard of that date until the issue was made when Trump was going to schedule his event and the Shit Hit the Fan. In school, we were only taught the proclamation Lincoln freed the slaves. History was taught so different from one State to another.

As Canadians we learnt more about America in school than Americans did about their own country!

Growing up, we were moving all the time. I never went to the same school system for 2 years in a row. My stepfather was in the service and we were always moving. By the way, we were in Libya during the Suez Crisis and the Arab kids threw rocks at our bus going through this 1 small town on our way to school.
