More positive news for tourism in Mexico and elsewhere

by el vagabundo @, Thursday, October 22, 2020, 19:21 (37 days ago)

This will help 1-3 week vacationers and Mexico too! Air Canada the same and I am sure other airlines from Canada.

We’re excited to announce that the Canadian and Alberta governments are launching a new rapid COVID-19 testing pilot program. Effective November 2, Albertans and eligible travellers on non-stop flights returning from international destinations to Calgary International Airport may only be required to quarantine at home for as little as 2 days.

This means that getaway you’ve been craving is possible. And since Calgary is our home, we have more flights to sunny destinations than any other airline in Alberta. Discover all of the places you can escape to this winter.

This is a pilot program and will be closely monitored, so I wouldn't get too excited just yet!

This is actually something that is being deployed throughout the Canadian main airports, in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal. It won't prevent you from getting sick but would save you from a quarantine if you test negative. That will be a game changer for many and positive news.

It is all over the news today in Canada so not sure where you have been looking...My source is me as this is the field I work in and getting first hand info...but here is one media link that popped on a simple Google search: https://torontosun.com/news/national/breaking-rapid-testing-at-airports-to-replace-mandatory-quarantine-for-international-travellers?fbclid=IwAR3II...

I wish I could believe your information. I really do. But here’s what I’m reading.

A new pilot project for Canada has been launched at the Calgary International Airport that will drop the mandatory quarantine in lieu of Rapid COVID-19 testing.
https://www.traveloffpath.com/canada-to-end-14-day-quarantine-in-lieu-of-rapid-testing/

Timelines on when the program will begin have yet to be announced, but sources tell the Sun it’s expected to be first implemented in one hub airport — either Toronto Pearson or Calgary — before being rolled out to the rest of the country.

https://canadianaviationnews.wordpress.com/2020/10/22/breaking-rapid-testing-at-airports-to-replace-mandatory-quarantine-for-international-travellers/

When this program may be expanded to Toronto isn’t known,
https://torontosun.com/news/national/breaking-rapid-testing-at-airports-to-replace-mandatory-quarantine-for-international-travellers?fbclid=IwAR3II...

From my reading of it:

This is a trial run in Calgary.

There is not a specific plan for it at other Canadian airports.

It may be rolled out to other airports.

I want to convinced there is a plan for this to be in place in the near future at other Canadian airports. Help me to believe.

Maybe if you were working with me you would question this less and look forward to it as this is what is happening. In case you missed it, the prime minister in his press conference yesterday commented about the purchased of these rapid tests and what they were going to be used for. Nobody is going to make such announcements just for the fun of it. We are not training and hiring staff for this just in case lol. And it is certainly not just for one airport but this was the best place to work out the kinks.

Yes, if I were working with you, I may well question this less. I doubt that I would look forward to it more, as I’m looking forward to it tremendously already. But in a previous posting you said,

It is all over the news today in Canada so not sure where you have been looking

I looked for news and didn’t see confirmation of it, except for the kind of information I quoted. Can you tell us when this will be introduced say, in Vancouver?

26 Week Pilot Of Covid Testing at Calgary Airport

Some more information is coming available. I’m not as excited as I was.

Starting on November 2, Alberta residents and eligible international travellers arriving on a non-stop flight into Calgary can take >a rapid test for COVID-19 and possibly reduce their mandatory quarantine to as little as 2 days with a negative test. This >includes guests who are connecting to airports within Alberta and essential foreign travellers staying within the province for at >least 14 days after arrival.

The Government of Alberta and Government of Canada have agreed on a 26-week pilot project that will make YYC the >exclusive airport for Canada’s first quarantine reduction project that will allow testing to take place on arrival from all >international destinations, to reduce quarantine to as little as 2 days from 14 days.

**This pilot project may be restricted or broadened at any point as the Governments of Canada and Alberta evaluate through the trial.

https://www.westjet.com/en-ca/travel-info/rapid-testing

People who take the rapid test must remain in Alberta for test period, so effectively it is available to “Albertans” not “Canadians”.

At least from this information, it appears that there is no plan to introduce the program anywhere but Calgary. There is the possibility, “ as the Governments of Canada and Alberta evaluate through the trial.”

I don’t see this as a bad thing, but as a good thing... just not as good as I hoped yesterday that it would be.

Agree, it is nice to see something positive. The number of people affected in the tourism industry is huge and we live in an area that depends heavily on it the same as Zihua.

The question is can you get test results in 2 days? Over here In the US it’s hit and miss, hopefully you can reserve something in advance. My wife had to be tested early July for work when we came back from Cabo, got the results in about 8 hours others have been 5 days or so.

This is a different method of testing. You get your results within the hour. It is actually a 15-20 minutes test but the expectations are within the hour because of the volume and they are not sure about staffing yet. The way this works is that you get tested upon landing and if the result is negative you are released without having to quarantine but of course still have to use mask and social distance. Then you get retested 5-6 days later and if negative again you are good to go. It will be a huge boost for the airlines and will help many that the issue of quarantine was the hurdle.

The "We're excited to announce....." isn't in quotations, but I assume it's from WestJet. The same folks who, a few days ago, cancelled all direct flights Calgary to Zihua for the month of November. Maybe they'll have a change of heart?

It was the responsible thing to do for WestJet and costly as they just announced yesterday they would refund al tickets for cancellations due to Covid and not as a credit for future flights but as the same method of payment. The ticket sales were low anyway so not really worth it either. Now this may change things and help the airlines too.

Change of heart would be too late now as weans I expect other have booked with Air Canada Calgary to Vanc and then direct to Ixtapa same day Nov 07th that we had booked on WestJet

Two flights arrived with Covid on October 17 in Calgary
One from Puerto Vallarta and the other from Cancun prior to the implementation of the program.
Nov 2 should be interesting.
