Flown with a dog?

by BL @, Thursday, October 22, 2020, 23:20 (35 days ago)

Hello dear board,
I hope everyone is healthy and in good spirits.
Has anyone flown lately (past 6 months or so) with their dog? If so, can you please share your experience? We'd rather do customs/immigration in ZIH, rather than in Mexico City.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Flown with a dog?

Flew with a dog on 5 flights 10/8 thru 10/10. Entered Mexico in Guadalajara where vet papers were checked right near baggage and i was handed a form from the Mex government clearing my dog for travel. Dog was never actually checked. The form was again checked in Mexico City though the dog was never physically checked. The dog was not checked on arrival in Zihua. It is still important to have the vet verification the rabies are current and the dog has been dewormed within the last 6 months.

My prior experience( before AK Air put airbuses on LAX ZIH route) was that the dog is checked in Zihua by a federal employee and the data is entered into the gov't database. In the past, they have removed the dog fr0m the kennel and then sprayed some unknown substance in the kennel. Thankfully this did not happen this trip.

I had to follow both the AK Air and then the Aeromexico requirements, the only real difference is Aeromexico wants the vet certification within 5 days of travel.

Thanks so much! This is super helpful. So you flew Alaska and Aeromexico this time?

yes Fairbanks to Seattle, Seattle to La and then LA to Guadalajara on Alaska. Then Guadalajara to Mex City and Mex City to Zihua on Aeromexico so all flights had pressurized cargo sections for pets. My dog is not a designated pet that could fly in the cabin and too young at that!

Thank you. We have an older dog that does not fit underneath the seat, and unfortunately Alaska has an embargo from Nov 15 to January 10. We have plans to leave the first week of December. United has put a stop on their PetSafe program. AeroMexico does not let our breed travel as cargo.
Looking at every alternative right now, and of course, hoping our dog makes it the next 6 weeks...

Thank you again

American is making a push this year to be seen as the pet friendly airline, just a thought. Did not know about the block on Alaska but with the airbuses it may not matter. It certainly can get complicated.

Thank you so much! Just checked American, she is one of the restricted breeds. Sigh...

question for BL- What constitute/qualifies a dog to be a restricted breed? I've never traveled with mine, but at some point may wish to. Thanks

Restricted Dog Breeds

Typically it has to do with the facial structure and how it affects their breathing.

Think pug for example.

Exactly as Talley Ho says, depends on the animal's facial structure. They are called brachycephalic breeds, there are both dogs and cats in this category. The airlines know these breeds are prone to breathing issues so they restrict them, I assume for liability reasons.
