The government is trying to discourage large gatherings. However, we'll just have to see if they ban the people who sell their foods on Calle Pedro Ascencio near the iglesia.

I had the good fortune of being in Zihuatanejo last year during the Virgin of Guadalupe festival. It was a grand affair but this year, even if only half the number of people crowd into that same space by the church across from the glorieta (roundabout) near Playa La Madera, the number of Covid cases among the locals would skyrocket. It will take some serious police action to keep the crowds away, especially since they all parade in different groups using different routes to arrive at the same place.

We were there last year and several previous years as well. La Señora de Guadalupe is magical.

It's such a privilege to witness and take part in the uniquely Mexican holiday. I find it meaningful to shake hands in the Sign of Peace (En Paz) at Mass. I'm not Catholic or even particularly religious but that moment makes me feel close to God.
